Title: Minus 3 and all is well
Post by: MNWC on February 03, 2012, 07:18:26 am
Went out to the van at quarter to seven this morning. minus 3

There is snow and ice on the windscreen and bonnet but none on the top of the van ( a good start)

i new this would be the test today.i bought  2 500 watt aquarium heaters a while ago and am very pleased so far

I pop them in the tank when i fill up in the evening (350 Litre)

The next day the water is warm and the van is frost free.

No Leaks, No drilling out your tank, No fuss....

Bristol (Filton) hit - 7.7 last night and was lower than - 6 at 8.00 am.

First hard frost (yesterday a paltry -3) and immersion keeping van tank warm.

Good stuff. Prolly start mid morning as temp gets to minus 2!

whether its -3 or -7 if you ve got a heater in the van overnight, immersion heater, oil filled radiator, aquarium heaters, propex heater etc,etc whatever.you ll be able to do some work today.

as soon as weather gets to -1 or 0 you can work with cold wfp.just make sure you keep water running as much as poss.also takes a seperate flask with hot water to defrost jets if need be.salt for doorways or trad them.

even if you just work 11am-3pm with no breaks you ll earn at least £100.better than sitting in the house looking out of the window!! ;D ;D ;D

sean nothing wrong with using an oil filled radiator!have you tried it yet?

Rads are fine IMO, they serve the same purpose of keeping the frost out.

Like an immersion they will take a while to get to temperature  - so you have to get them in the van before it freezes outside.
The only advantage with an immersion type heater is the warm water you'll get for a few hours, but they are three KW's so not the cheapest thing to run.

I've got a 1kw fan heated with a thermostat and froststat - which is good at heating  up cold rooms fairly quickly - I just liked the idea of having access to warm water  - which could come in handy if I've got a particularly grotty first clean.

I bought a weather station from Maplin a couple of years ago, it measures everything Wind speed & direction, Atsmospheric pressure, Rainfall, Temperature in & out, Wind chill, Humidity - it has an alarm that I've set to go off when the outside temperature hits +1.0c and it transfers all the stored data to my pc.  A bit excessive for my needs - but it does make life easier.

I'm in Sale Sean. I got one of those devices from Aldi a while ago, outside sensor and inside you have a "tablet" which gives temp, humidity, indoor temp etc etc.
