Title: DRIP, DRIP,DRIP, D-I TANKS, DRIP, DRIP.
Post by: neil100 on December 24, 2005, 06:52:16 pm
I got my van back last Saturday from Facelift in Derbyshire.

They installed my vanmount system, I was expecting no leaks from the system, but I was wrong, I have 2 DI cannisters on board and I have noticed today that both leak.

Being a peferctionist I want them  to be leak free. They drip slowly but surely from the flow in and flow out. They have used a Blue plastic  bolt device ( not sure what to call it )27mm on the flow in at the top of the di tank vessell with smaller bore John Guest push fittings connected to the blue bolt.

I have given the blue bolt an extra half turn clockwise, still leaking but a bit faster now. IT as got ptfe tape on it, but I dont want to keep tightining it incase I snap the thread. Any suggestions or do they all leak?

On the out end it as a  hozelock type connection, Plastic again but that drips even faster.

Can I sort it out?

Facelift said it was not leaking when they had it.

I would have thought there use of ptfe tape would sugest that they had problems with the fittings, I am not aware of any instances where ptfe should be needed with plastic fittings they are usaully sealed with washers or O rings, I'D insist they sort it out.

I spoke to a plumber freind last night and he said that plastic  nylon threads are very hard to get a water tight seal. They just dont tighten like a metal thread and you can have movement and twisting of the joint.

So I dont know why they dont use Brass.

yep then they snap like you said, couldnt he cast his eye over it for you, you could at least go back to the fitters and complain with some clout if it isnt right.

I suppose I could call back. I know they would sort it out.

The only problem, its a 250 mile round trip.

Fuel x  time = better to fix it myself.

Hi Nel

I had a few leaks on my sysytem when I got it back from Facelift. If I remember correctly mine was also leaking from the fittings on the DI canister. All it needed was the push-in fittings pushing in a bit more, a couple more turns of PTFE tape or a smear of vasaline on the threads. IMHO the plastic fittings should seal ok. To be honest I am not sure if these guys are qualified in engineering, so I went through all my system and  I dont suffer from any leaks now. It can be done.

Is this where your leak is

Mick, That girl is doing it to me again. Cant take my eyes of her.

On your pic, thats where its leaking. My hose is diffrent going in, John Guest push fit hoseing, same as my static ro. Thats not the problem, its the Blue plactic bolt thats screwed into the Di tank itself that leaks. The blue bolt is a lot thinner then the grey one in the picture.

On the other side of the Di tank its an hozelock fitting that leaks as well.

I will try downloading photos again.

Thanks Nel.

undo the thread and put some more PTFE tape around, job done

Yep I agree  ;) I think the fitting you are having problems with is a reducing bush like this
(http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=tbn:Zpe53FemmwIJ:www.flomax.ie/dynamic/img/PRRD022100.jpg)
I would re-fit it with a couple of turns of ptfe tape. As for the hoselock fitting: mine tend to drip slightly but as they are located externally on the van I dont worry to much.

Spot on there Mick.

I have put more ptfe tape round this afternoon. They still drip, but at a much reduced rate. I may inquire at a plumbers merchants to see if their is some compound you can put on the thread to help seal it.

I put a lot of ptfe tape on to help seal it. The threads to my mind can not be that well engineered, as I had a lot less trouble when a changed the radiators in our house.

I will have to have a look at my freinds DI cannistor fittings, and compare.

Any other suggestions?

Nel.

It seems loctite do a plastic sealing compound.

Thanks Chris,

I will look into it.

Should be all right as long as it does not contaminate the water.

Probable got a mix of NPT & BSP  (national pipe thread  and british standard pipe ) or garden hose thread there. There all close but not exactly the same. Take them apart and check, they will probably seal OK with plenty of PTFE tape.

"Plumbers Mate" fixes everything, can get it anywhere even Wicks and B&Q  and very cheap, its like window putty and comes in a tub, just pack the threads and tighten. Dont think it will effect the TDS.

I have done it.

PTFE tape was not enough on its own.

I put some LS-X jointing compound on the male thread. It does not set hard. Then plenty of ptfe tape on top of that.

Stoped it leaking.

Thanks for the help.

Happy New Year.Nel.
