Microsoft promised this would be a free service for the long future when i set mine up 3 years ago .... then they said they were changing over in 2012, then it was 2013 (this was on their website). B*stards have gone back to 2012 now for some reason.

Last day is 30th April 2012 for those who dont know.... change it or loose it.

Im going to change mine over, but as soon as i have the cash im having one built that i have control of. I hate microsoft with a passion !!!

6months free then $6 a month is still a bargain mate to build and maintain your own website.

I'll be doing the transition when I get some time.

I hadn't looked into it but if it's only $6 a month, I think that's well worth it, I don't think it would be any cheaper moving to a different company..

Got this far in an hour http://blastawaycleaning.sharepoint.com/Pages/default.aspx

Nightmare! I've gotta re-upload all the images in the gallery, all the banner in Document Gallery.

You've also gotta copy and paste over all your keywords etc for each page!

Don't know what happened but I just had a scare. Was attempting to upload images and there was nothing there.
Went direct into my folders where images, invoices, everything is and there was nothing.
Didn't know what to do so I restarted the PC and it's all there.
Be careful what you allow.

I cant remember exactly, but when i looked at the transfer details ages ago, i got the impression you could actually save your page at html or such, and transfer it over to the new platform.

Although from the sounds of it, it certainly aint that easy when it comes down to it...

Good luck guys!!

I have done what Nat suggested and gone elsewhere.
All they needed to do was confirm we still needed/used the sites and surely they could have done the rest.
I wouldn't have mined to pay a little for the continuity

There is a way of saving your website content while you switch then rebuild from the saved content. I guess you have toback it up before you start the transfer.

Has any1 tried justhost.com i did mine on there its really good you can design your site for free and its easy then you just pay them to host your webpage.its no hassle give them ago .or there is 1 that keeps getting advertised on the tv that looks quite good aswell,a sunday afternoon or an evening should be all you need.

Transfer emails and contacts?

You have to transfer domain name, email and contacts over too 365 once SBOL stops working and you have not transferred then you will lose everything permanently!!

I think its unfair the way Microsoft of doing things, surly they could have done it for us!!!!

do you have to redo the whole lot including ccs codes and keywords?
Title: Re: Transferring Office Live Website to Office 365
Post by: Blast Away on February 12, 2012, 11:26:42 pm
I use hotmail for my emails.

My domain name is with 1&1 not Microsoft. I'll redirect the domain so pages appear like http://www.blast-away.co.uk/graffitiremoval.aspx for example

You do have to do the keywords again yes.

I'm finding it all straight forward to do having both editing pages open together on the screen. Copying and pasting over text and highlighting images Ctrl C to copy and pasting onto 365 Ctrl V to paste. I'm sure you're all aware it doesn't allow you to right click and copy. This saves re-uploading the images again.

Have a butchers http://blastawaycleaning.sharepoint.com/Pages/default.aspx

HTML's you need to right click your embed, click properties and copy the code then in 365 insert a new HTML and paste. Copy and pasting direct like the images doesn't work.

I know pal. It's been down for the past 2 days. Reason being is waiting up to 72 hours at a time for propagation of adding and verifying domain name, changing name servers and now setting domain name (blast-away.co.uk) to the default. Should be fine tonight.

Before you add a TXT record you'll need to remove you domain name as the primary in OLSB and set it as the domain name that came free with OLSB.
Following the drop down option 'General' FOR THE txt record or if your registrar is there on the list select it. Copy the TXT record and paste it in when adding a TXT record on your DNS settings on that domain name in your registrar's login.

My domain in with LCN. Log into where yours is hosted and add TXT record.

rename the image file on your pc, up load it to new file then replace it link I gave you with the correct file path this would be easy way if you dont understand it. if you do understand the image source is incorrect (my guess it is not in /documents anymore.

I sorted it pal. Just needed to replace 'blastawaycleaning.sharepoint.com' with 'blast-away.co.uk' in the HTML for the banners as I had made 'blast-away.co.uk' the primary domain.

One headache now which not only is affecting me but every is the word 'Pages' which has been added into the URL for each page. Example www.blast-away.co.uk/Pages/GraffitiRemoval.aspx where as in OLSB it was www.blast-away.co.uk/GraffitiRemoval.aspx

So all links showing in Google searches will result in 404 page not found error.

is there a place in there where you can alter the 404 redirect message/address?

I know in wordpress you can change the configuration and address of the 404 redirect so i can have another page pop up when someone clicks on a bad link instead of the 404 coming up. not sure about the new olsb though.

rename the image file on your pc, up load it to new file then replace it link I gave you with the correct file path this would be easy way if you dont understand it. if you do understand the image source is incorrect (my guess it is not in /documents anymore.

So all links showing in Google searches will result in 404 page not found error.
add a folder (pages) and add redirects

Can you elaborate please...
I am not cluded up with the windows live free pages everyone has, I do remember saying to people a few years back that nothing is for free.

they are changing I am guessing sooner or later to paid. if it is paid, you should be able to make a folder name this pages, then inside put a redirect on all your pages that are no longer used, you can on normal hosting do a custom 404 redirect page (going to your home page or where ever) I dont know about microsoft sorry I am sure you could though unless this is another draw back on free things.

if you cant sort it give me a call in the week and I will go in and have a look for you and see what is what if you want.

ukreg or uk2

I would advice anyone to get professional hosting rather than a free hosting account somethings in life are worth paying for.

Worked out how to redirect OLSB rankings in Google or backlinks. For example;

http://www.blast-away.co.uk/chewinggumremoval.aspx  Click and see. It will show text if your speed is low, if fast then a quick glimpse. Taking the page to the new URL.

That's the old URL which at the moment will rank under keyword chewing gum removal manchester for example.
The new URL O365 now includes /pages/ in the link which can't be taken out.

The recommended redirect strategy – 301 Redirect

A 301 redirect is the most efficient, visitor friendly, robot (spider, crawler) friendly and search engine friendly solution around for web sites that are hosted on servers running Apache. If you are not sure, check with your hosting provider.

A 301 redirect is just a set of commands you type into your .htaccess file.

When a visitor (whether human or robotic) requests a web page via any means, your web server checks for a .htaccess file. The .htaccess file contains specific instructions for certain requests, including security, redirection issues and how to handle certain errors.

The code “301″ is interpreted as “moved permanently”. After the code, the URL of the missing or renamed page is noted, followed by a space, then followed by the new location or file name.

First of all, you’ll need to find the .htaccess file in the root directory of where all your web pages are stored. If there is no .htaccess file there, you can create one with Notepad or a similar application.

Make sure when you name the file that you remember to put the “.” at the beginning of the file name. This file has no tail extension.

Some hosting providers offer redirect services through their “control panels, so you don’t have to perform low level changes on the .htaccess file itself. Instead, they provide a user friendly interface for this.

Check with your hosting provider to see what the optimal way to perform a 301 redirect is in your case. I will continue the article with the barebones solution.

If there is a .htaccess file already in existence with lines of code present, be very careful not to change any existing line unless you are familiar with the functions of the file.

Scroll down past all the existing code, leave a line space, then create a new line that follows this example:

redirect 301 /folder/page1.htm http://www.you.com/folder/custom_usb_drives.htm

It’s as easy as that. Save the file, upload it back into your web and test it out by typing in the old address to the page you’ve changed. You should be instantly and seamlessly transported to the new location.

Notes: Be sure not to add “http://www” to the first part of the statement – just put the path from the top level of your site to the page. Also ensure that you leave a single space between these elements:
•redirect 301 (the instruction that the page has moved)
•/folder/page1.htm (the original folder path and file name)
•http://www.you.com/folder/custom_usb_drives.htm (new path and file name)

The same format applies not only to renamed files, but also to files moved to a different location.

How the search engines treat the 301

The 301 redirect is the safest way to preserve your rankings.

On the next indexing (crawling, spidering), the search engine robot will obey the rule indicated in your .htaccess file and index the new page name every time a link or its internal database tries to access the old page.

In the next update (again, this could take months), the old file name and path will be dropped and replaced with the new one.

Sometimes you may see alternating old/new file names during the transition period, along with some possible fluctuations in rankings as things settle. Don’t panic, this is normal.

I think Microsoft have made a right mess of this. I'm beginning to wonder if I even need a website. I'm a one man band with plenty of work and I'm not sure if getting any bigger is for me anyway.

No mate, it's a guide I followed through being passed on by the guys on the transition forum.

It's a headache but well worth it.

Page were dropping ranks on Google due to the 404 errors. Back on top of page one now for specific keywords.

I think I'm verified now. Transferred domains to Melbourne IT Just gotta wait 72 hours for something I think. Website is down now though. I dont know what I have to do about my domain email addresses though. I use Windows Live Mail. Are the pop and smtp servers etc the same or do I have to change anything?

I did mine...what a palaver! Took me ages doing bits and bobs at a time, the help pages were....helpful! lol.

http://community.office365.com/en-us/default.aspx

I did the wait for 72 hours but nothing changed, had to go back and do it all again (the verification and transfer)

Microsoft want a kicking for this!

I have 3 work email addresses, I couldn't figure how to transfer them to new account without purchasing licenses? So added my personal account (hotmail) and attached my work emails to re-direct.

Sure there will be help here if ya get stuck!

Got all mine done & now back on top of Google! ;D

I have to say it was quite straight forward (I have no emails with it though). I printed off the transfer guide PDF & followed that step by step.

The only point I had issues was with MelbourneIT, I couldn't add the TXT record to my DNS records. Had to phone them & they added it for me. It wasn't anything I was doing wrong & they didn't know why my account wouldn't accept the TXT record. Apart from that, I found it fine. ;)

Looks like my free trial is nearly up. I'm debating whether to start paying monthly for it or not.

My problem at the moment is I have two domain email addresses through it and it seems to want to charge me £4 for each because each is classed as a user. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I just want my info@ and payments@ email addresses but I'm not paying £8 a month for them both.
