WELL IF I WAS GOING DOWN THAT ROUTE (WHICH IM NOT) I WOULD WORK OUT THE MAX YOU WOULD WANT TO PAY A FELLOW WINDY FOR A DAY RATE, FACTOR IN ALL THE HOLIDAY PAY AND EVERTHING ELSE YOUR OBLIGED TO. SUBTRACT THE ABOVE AND GO FROM THERE.

thats simple what they are worth.

If they earn you £4k a month pay them more
if they earn you £1k a month pay them less and kick them up the arse

pay what you think they are worth and you can afford remember paye goes up the more u pay

So if you came across someone who is 100% trustworthy, clean driving license, experiance, reliabilty etc etc... would you pay them a high percentage of what they earn you? if so, what is that percentage?

Hmmmm.  What if the work they're to do is not very good quality?  The above is too much of a simplification.  I doubt many people here turnover £4K a month by themselves.

if the work quality was poor tosh he wouldnt be a perfect employee would he, he would be poop and getting sacked he wouldnt be asking how much to pay him would he instead asking whats the best way legally to sack him.

james,

if he is as good as you say and always that good if you can trust him to run another van I would pay him a higher amount not a percentage of the day rate just a higher basic. and a bonus system to make him work harder.
at the end of the day you employee him to make you money.
Id be happy to start him on £10-£15 an hr if running a van him self
