Title: get rid of accountant?
Post by: lee_dewing on January 29, 2012, 02:42:17 pm
Hi  that time of year again and mixed feelings over my accountant.

He keeps my tax bills down but keep thinking of doing myself as there has been a few unexpected bills to pay with inland rev.

my accountant does put in a lot of expenses in and am just worried if i do myself the inland rev will give me a kicking.

Because when i do their will probably be less expenses. ::)

Don't know what to do for the best :-\

A good accountant should save you 1000 for every 100 that they cost, it is a proper minefield so I would always say use a good one...

i reckon instead of paying £1200 a yr tax it would be more like £2000 a year tax bill. (did it myself)

As said heavy on expenses (creative).

The real problem with him is his a git for not returning calls emails.

This can be said with alot of services.

My customers seem shocked when i return their calls and emails ;D

Lee there are over 7000 tax rules at the moment and they are growing each year, its your accountants job to know these and to use them for your business.

You could try and get though them on your own, you can even phone up the revenue for help, but remember they will only give you simple answers to your questions, they don't know your business as well as a accountant does.

The other thing you need to look at is what happens if you get a tax investigation, these are decided mainly by the revenue's computer, so you can be as honest as they come with you tax returns but you will still get an investigation, allthough a accountant will not make the tax man go away, you are more likely than not to make less mistakes with one.

But it all comes down to personal choise, I have a chartered accountant and I pay him £350 a year, but I clean his windows and charge him £325 per year, so I'm getting someone who does all my staffs wageslips, plus he sorts all the paperwork and files my returns every year for £25  8)

I should have said he's a book keeper, not fully qualified (aca, is it?) chartered accountant.

I do need to keep better hold of reciepts and expenses.

As said he bumps up my expenses quite a bit.

But i'm not in the league of our betters in the world of politics.

Just read that link on hmrc's plan to raid small business's.

mine costs me £2500 all in , but for the reasons already stated i see it as a good deal. at £315 you are obviously not one of his bigger fishes hence his lack of interest in returning calls etc but if he does a good job at the end of the year then youd be crazy not to stick with him. When you are paying peanuts you cant expect a top notch response.

I pay a bookeeper £250 who files the tax return online probably right now as I only paid her on Saturday!! Did think about doing it myself but as soon as Capital allowances from previous years was mentioned it put me off because I wasn't sure what the annual percentage was for them etc. Maybe I'll do it myself next time we'll see!!
