Title: Ceramic Tiling For Excisting Customer
Post by: L.Doubtfire - The Blade Runner on January 08, 2012, 08:01:28 am
Hi members just some advice here thanks.I have an elderly
Lady whose carpets I`ve cleaned for many years, also I`ve
Painted/decorated her staircase one time as I used to be a
Painter/decorator `many moons ago`.
She`s asked me if I can ceramic tile her kitchen area splash
Back around her oven and washing machine. It`s been done
Before with plain white tiles,it does look `ribby`,some are
Cracked and badly discoloured. It covers an area of about
2 to 3 square yards and the lady has taken advantage of some
Boxes of beautiful end of range discontinued Italian ceramic
Tiles.Things are a bit quiet for me right now and I`ve always
Fancied doing some ceramic tiling. To scrape and chip off the
Original tiles, prepare the wall area and tile / grout etc what kind
Of price do I give her ? Also what are the pitfalls to a job like
This ?
The walls are in excellent condition.
Thanks in advance for replies.

See if you can get a quote yourself from a professional ;) I'm sure I was quoted £49 per sq yd for floor tiles to be fitted, I did them myself in the end and did a brilliant job, even  if I do say so myself... ;D

I agree, put in a good fair day rate. As for pitfalls... you obviously are DIY inclined, otherwise you wouldn't even consider such a job. The secret is good planning and keep things clean and tidy. (A tidy workplace is a safe workplace). Just watch out for any electrics if any drilling required and don't tile round sockets. Tile under the sockets and then buy longer screws to refit..

That kind of tiling is very easy and you can ( if you wish ) tile on top of existing tiles as long as the surface has been thoroughly cleaned.

Remove olde tiles and scrape any old adhesive off the wall. Then use a rapid set powder adhesive as you can grout within 2 hrs of fixing the tiles. If using ready mixed adhesive you will need to wait 24hrs for adhesive to go off so you can grout.

And lift the sockets dont tile round em..looks naff. Rotary tile cutter or angle grinder handy for awkward bits.
Chisel on a hammer drill makes easy work removing tiles. You may need to re-plaster depending on wall condition. good Luck.  PS laser level very useful if you can borrow one.

I any plaster comes off use Rapid set tile adhesive to fill holes...If you plaster or use any other filler you may have to wait a week before tiling. If you tile straight away you could have problems.
