The carpet does contain wool, the smell was apparent just after doing the job. the carpet was not really wet, dry in some places, damp in others.

Do you know what the cause is

Hello mark
Have you spoken to the person who cleaned your carpets,as he is proberbly unaware of the problem and should be able to rectify it.
                         cheers mark

Probably just the smell of damp wool, should disappear in a few days.

Does it smell a bit fishy?, it could be rotten underlay, caused by overwetting on previous clean

Hi Mark,

It is very difficult to give a verdict without seeing the offending carpet as there are so many different factors involved, so we can only guess at what the problem may be. Wool will smell like wet sheep when cleaned, and if you have an area that has been subjected to excessive sunlight that can make it smell even worse, ie patio/french doors etc. This should go when it is completely dry. Your best option would be as Mark suggested, call the firm who did the cleaning and raise your concerns. If they are a reputable firm they will be only too happy to resolve the situation.

Derek.

once a carpet has been cleaned you need to give it plenty of airflow to allow it to dry,-open doors and windows.
i take it your cleaner advised you of this and i also take it you followed his advice?

Many thanks for all your help boys & girls. in answer to a few questions. no pets in the house, good carpet only been down three years with underlay and has never been cleaned previosly.

the smell was not in evidence last night so the answers posted concerning the smell of wet wool carpet appear to be the problem.

many thanks for all your answers on this
