Has anyone done paid advertising?
What have you found works best, if any?
Local Paper?
Spick & Span Directory?
Google Adwords?
Or just leafleting and doorknocking? ::)
-
In 8 years I have advertised once in the yellow pages, about 3 years ago, and I had 1 major quote, a £300 plus job that I didnt get, and from what I know, about 2 domestic customers.
Other than that I have only dropped leaflets which might I add, were only 4 to an a4 peice of paper, photocopied in black n white, and the response from them was unbelivable.
... and people say leaflet dropping doesnt work :)

The best way is having your van done, cant beat it ;)

I advertised in the local paper. 5 weeks, it cost a bloody fortune. Only 3 calls from that and 1 job.
I leaflet drop all the time and dont have much responce.
When i canvass i get the work. Knocking on doors and talking to potential clients. The only thing that works for me is door knocking.
Only thing is its such bloody hard work pounding the streets on my days off. Im definitely gonna try and find someone to leaflet drop for me and help with canvassing. Its the only way to build a great round.

yellow pages keeps the phone ringing from commercial and domestic .
leaflet drops , bit hit and miss , but still worthwhile.

Did you do classified Steve K?
-
Yeah I went classified for 5 weeks at a cost of 300 quid. To be honest I think I made a mistake there as I got next to nothing. :(
I'm always successfull when I canvass, don't think I'll be advertising for a while.

Being seen working in a professional manner along with uniform and signwritten van. Doesn;t cost the earth and it brings in steady work.
It's catch 22 though, as you need some work to begin with.
Buying some work and building in (above way) works for me.

Steve canvassing would have guaranteed 150 quid a month.... If you look at my website i also do social media management. Got a nottingham window cleaner on board for a three month trial...

Very best way for new work is Door knocking.
We've advertised/or still advertising in the following medias..
local paper for gutter clearing (mid size box) - regular trickle of work - has more than covered it's cost.
posters ( large 4 footers ) at petrol stations & other high volume traffic areas - waste of time/money
Parish mags ( 4 different ones ) - sprinkling of work - usually good quality stuff - easy covers the few quid it costs
flyers/leaflets - for effort & time spend delivering - return is poor
shop windows - hit and miss good as a back burner
Van sign writing - A must - brought in a HUGE amount of work
Web site - good as a background presence - well worth getting as it has brought in some 4 fig. work
Local Auth. mag ( 50k house delivery ) - just wiped its nose
Customers - always a good source of new work if you are giving a good service
