Thanks for replies.
I didn't think it was either however the customer has been advised by a third party that it was harmful, so I thought, better be safe than sorry !

self cleaning glass is normally a coating of titanium dioxide (TiO2) - photocatalysis (breaking down of dirt using sunlight) and hydrophilicity (where the contact angle of water to glass is greater than 160degrees, allowing the water to run off taking the broken up dirt with it)

titania (titanium dioxide) is almost completely inert and will not react with deionised water.

self cleaning glass can be made with a polymer coating which can be cleaned off with di water but none of th major manufacturers actually use this method.

I always tell punters with self cleaning glass that it means they will have to clean it themselves.

Why? 'Self cleaning' is just a name for it. It doesn't mean it cleans itself, it just stays cleaner.
Don't buy any Sealskinz, then  ;D.

one of my new customers checked with supplier. they confirmed pure water is fine, but shouldn't use soap or chemicals.

No, and I didn't say it was. Like Sealskinz are not made out of seals or the singer Seal.
It's just a name......eyes roll.

so, the fact that it is called "self cleaning" has no relevance then Mr Griffin,
nothing to do with clever marketing then?

It's not as relevant as some think.
And it probably is clever marketing  ;).

Actually, the way it gets sold to some customers, i would say its closer to dodgy marketing. I went to quote a house where they had just had a conservatory built and she said "you won't need to include that its self cleaning"  I said nothing.
