Better with "own occupation" insurance rather than "any occupation" insurance although the former is now hard to get.
"Own occupation" pays out if you can't do your regular trade, "any occupation" only pays out if can't do any kind of work whatsoever.

IF( and its a big IF) you can dicipline yourself to put the money away and not touch it then running your own scheme is almost certainly better. But you have to do it properly. Not blowing it everytime it starts to burn a hole in your pocket. There lies the problem. Good intentions on their own are not enough.
At the very least it has to be paid into a proper ten year scheme where you are contracted to pay in come what may. And it has to be hard to get the money out so you only do it in times of genuine and real need.

I think you are better off putting it away. I pay myself a wage from my Business Account rather than live off my turnover. If you can get 6 months money put to one side you  have your cushion.
