We have a frost stat fitted to one van which works well when the operator remembers to leave it on overnight...!
The company it came from no longer make them, so does anyone know of anyone else who makes them?
-
What model was it? What amps are you trying to supply?
-
Was made by Poseidon products, it runs a 12v pump, so no idea what amps...
If you could make them, there is a market for all the Fogwash/l5/Purefreedom hot users.
-
Why do they need a frost stat? Is the idea to run overnight?
-
Yes, to kick the pump in, which activates the heater, preventing freezing pipes.
If you need some pics I can take front panel off and do some.

Unsure as to how clever you would need to be, it looks like a temperature sender cable, connected to a programmable LCD, which when it reaches preset temps, it allows power to switch on. It has a switch which allows permanent power to pump, or "frost mode" which only allows power when preset is reached. Hope that makes sense?
Again, pics could be available for you.

Arthur from www.surecleansystems.com has a basic unit like that (not on the website, but give him a call). Mine should be a little more advanced if it ever gets finished.

I've built one, but I'm reluctant to put it on the market for safety reasons, the main one being that I'm not convinced an unattended gas water heater is a good idea. THere are a number of other drawbacks, one of which is the L5 - and its infamous 20 minute cutout. Who's going to want to get up every 20 minutes in the night to reset it?
I think Nat's has extra features like battery charger/monitor as well.
I'd like to see the £15 one - any links to it?

Not sure on retail yet,.. all the extra features I wanted are pushing the price higher unfortunately.
You should be on the Guild site, drop me an e-mail & I'll sort it out: info@mgwc.org

You are there Gav,.. half way down: http://www.mgwc.org/SE.html

Yes we still produce this frost stat units. You can get them through Sureclean, Purefreedom, Wintecs and other WFP suppliers

Would it really be any more dangerous than leaving electric heaters plugged in all night?

Here's the frost stat I built back in the summer.

Like I say, I would be reluctant to put it on sale due to safety reasons. This one works by sensing the air temperature, not the WATER temperature. When the temp drops to the set point, the relay is triggered and contacts the pump - water circulates and the boiler responds. The outside temp rises = the stat closes and boiler stops.
What is to stop the water heating in the pipework/tank? It may well get hotter and hotter and hotter.... so you might think put the sensor in a pipe? Not a bad idea, but the logistic of that just complicate things.
That's why we sell heat trace (with a thermostat visually similar to this frost stat) to go on the pipes - the sensor is still in the air, but you don't have gobs of hot water circulating - it just protects those parts that need it. It doesn't heat the great cube of water.
HTH.
