What is the relevance of LIKES on Facebook?
I notice a lot of you are asking for likes for your fb page, why? Surely the people you want to like your fb page are your customers and not would be competitors?? Someone explain, please :'(
Also, is a business page better than a facebook profile for a business?
Also, when people like you, do they get any updates you make on your wall, like special offers, for instance and do the people who like you get updates when anyone posts on the page or just when you update the page?

Facebook profiles are for individuals only.
You need a Fan Page/Business page.
Google doesnt index profiles only the fan pages.

when google buys face book it will look at the 'likes' and use it to give relevance to google searches, so a 1000 likes means top of google searches
I just made that up but many a true word said in jest

I think it gives face book permission to send an email to you and all your friends every time you like something
Its a bit like a referral
So if you like and M and S Offer all your friends will here about it also
Also if you like a specialist shop in your town or village your friends will kow
Somehow Carpet cleaners have got to get customers to tick like box and then you become viral without having to do anything
When next customer ticks you etc etc etc no need for leaflets
In addition every time you like somthing it builds a profile about you along with other information you gave on registration.
They then use this to target adverts that might be of interest ,
So a danger could be if your customers like carpet cleaning and another carpet cleaner pays for an advert you could snooker yourself
There was a one hour documentary on face-book on BBC 2

Also, if a customer comments on your fb wall does that get spread to all of their friends?
Just trying to get my head around this fb thing ;D

The problem is you customers or potential customers need to be your 'friends' if I looked up some of my customers a tried added them they think it was creepy or I'm a pest.
It's no good if your friends are other c/cers! And if you don't want to target your real friends for work either then it's useless.
If you do want to target your own friends and their friends it could work, for me that would be the wrong demographic.
With all your repeat business I'm sure you don't need it Simon.

OK, this is what I do:
On Facebook, do a search for your town (and surrounding areas), and you will find that recently "Selling pages" have popped up all over - this is basically "Freeads" type pages where people list things they have for sale. Some of these pages have thousands of members, and everything that is posted here automatically appears on their "wall".
So every week or so, I post a before & after pic, and I tag all these pages in it, so it shows on that page - and on the page of everyone who likes the selling page. Then, every so often, I delete the tags, and redo them, so it shows on them again.
At the moment, I have 128 likes - I know about a dozen or so of those, others are all customers/potential customers.

PS, My Mrs sells gift hampers - only on facebook, and she has close to 1000 likes and shifts about 20 a week!

lol Doug, it's not quite so simple as knocking up a pic.
You need to get this app https://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=4949752878#!/apps/application.php?id=4949752878 (click on "add this to my page" when you're logged in as you, not the business).
Then you can either use HTML to fill the page, or like I've done which is a JPG image, but it takes some experimenting to get the size right). I used print artist platinum, so I've got the right size blank page for that, but it can only be opened using that particular program.
Then you also need to set it up so that your default landing page is the page displaying this image.
I appreciate that's probably about as clear as mud, but until you start working no it it's quite difficult to explain.

oh, and fb maybe disabling the app next year at some point, but I'm sure there's other ways to get it on there.

Doug,I've just looked at mine (pic, nothing else Hector!) and it's 944 x 1771 pixels if that's any use to you?
