As new as possible.
Gearbox issues were supposedly resolved around 56 plate.  So, if you must get Vivaro/Primastar/Trafic, get newer than that with the lowest mileage possible.  In fact I would rate this as more important than inspecting the general looking condition if choices have to be made.

I just bought a brand new one, very happy with it and much more economical than the Transit Connect I had, different class of van and far more classy looking so yeah get as new as possible as the pre
05 models had issues with gear boxes.

Is its the 6speed box?

if you think the box isnt right take it to someone who knows what they're on about as the part that fails is "easy" to do but once its gone its new box time

Those were the words of a local garage who rebuilds the gearbox and give me advanced warning if the box starts playing up

may save you a grand or 2

The gearbox was the main issue with earlier ones.  I bought mine with 37k on the clock.  Gearbox went at 39k - just within the warranty.  It's now coming up to 100k.  Gearbox seems OK but how can you tell?  I've had other things go on it too but I would expect that on an older van.  Screen washer pump and steering pump went around 54k service time (a bit early IMO).  Clutch went around 75k (fair enough I guess).  Other bits and pieces have needed doing at times as happens with vans - such as odds and sods on steering and suspension at MOT time.  Ignition barrel and starter motor went recently.  The problem is that it can get pretty expensive when things go wrong as they seem to be tricky vans to work on.  Gearbox apart though, my experience hasn't been too dire.

If you want to be more comfortable regarding payload, bear in mind that these vans have a 2.9 tonne version as well as 2.7.
