Title: Ideal Work Vehicle
Post by: EandM on December 10, 2011, 01:16:21 pm
Been using my Ford P100 for about six years now and apart from being underpowered it does the job very well.
Been thinking of a way to up the power but reckon this chap has sussed it....

Usual mod for the P100 if you want to go fast is a transplant from a Sierra or Granada 2.9i V6 or 24 valve V6 from the Granada / Scorpio Cosworth. Don't see two many 2.0 4 cylinder Sierra Cosworth conversions as they still fairly expensive. With a stock 2.9i 12 V6 it works a treat. 150 bhp / 173 lb ft of torque at 3,000 rpm takes care of lugging the 400litre tank about, is pretty much indestructible and in fuel injected form should still do around 25mpg which considering my 1.8TD only manages about 29mpg can't be bad. If I didn't need the extra seats I'd go down that road with mine but finding a 3.09:1 Capri rear axle isn't easy and you need it if you don't want to go deaf at 60mph.

Fitting a Rover based TVR unit is a brave move though and with the Capri axle and RS 500 bits is probably worth more than the asking price in pieces.

Might have fun trying to commercially insure it though.....

TVR originally used engines from Ford (mainly) and Rover. Capri 3.0 V6 'Essex' and later 2.9 and 2.9i 'Cologne' V6 and Rover 3.5 V8's in sizes from 3.5 to 5.0 depending on bore and stroke and amount of bhp or torque that TVR wanted to extract.

Beginning with the Cerbera in 1996 TVR made their own engines the V8 AJP8 and the straight six 'Speed Six'. It was apparently due to BMW taking over Rover at that time and TVR boss Peter Wheeler being concerned that the old Buick V8 may cease production due to it's age.

I think the ideal work vehicle would be an ex fire engine with cherry picker connected. Imagine how much pure water you could carry and how many poles could work off it! You could carry loads of ladders and if it was sign written you'd see it from a good distance. How many window cleaners could you get in the cab also! ;D

Our fire engine carries 1800 litres, would be awesome window cleaning tool on a massive commercial job, oh and carries 6 people  ;D
