yes, because the bigger the vessel the more resin is being used

No the bigger the vessel the less you use.

If you use a small vessel it will need changing more often than a much larger vessel.

If you have an 18" vessel you have less resin to polish the water.

If you have a large vessel 25 ltr then you have more resin so it will not need changing as often

ha, thanks for the quick response guys.

I was going to ask one question then changed my mind.... blaa... but then pressed enter!! ha  8)

anyway

i was going to ask if the size of the DI vessel is directly proportional to how quickly the resin gets used up. twice the size- twice as long

i guess the answer is yes

(same as twice the alcahol, twice the brain cells used up!!)

Still depends on the vessel...
But...
Also depends on the quality of the basic product flowing through.
ie.  Lower TDS into resin vessel = better quality water into vessel = longer life for resin

If you live in a soft water area (TDS 35 -38) do you think it is worth using an RO as that is what i am doing at the moment and haven't changed resin for over 4 month now still getting 000 reading.
Only asking as i am looking at fitting system in van after Christmas but still thinking of using RO.

It's only a small vessel on my RO and only holds about 1kg of resin.
If i decide to use just resin in the van then i will probably go for an 18 vessel.
Just wondered if it would bring the cost down using an RO and obviously i would be getting a larger RO to fill the tank in the van

with such low tds reading, you probably would not need any bigger RO than you have now. Also, it might be worth checking the tds reading as it comes out the RO and before it goes through the resin. It will be so low, maybe 000, that your resin is hardly, if at all, actually being used.
As you already have system in place, I would stick with your present system and it will be much more cost effective in the long term.

I get a reading of around 3 to 4 after it gone through RO.
