hi
just curious re domain names and websites (dont bother slating or comparing websites etc this post isnt about that and i know some you of dont need much encouragement to do so!)
can you have multiple domain names linked back to 1 website or do you need a different site per domain name??
just curious why i see people with multi names then different sites
hope that makes sense
Thanks
Paul

Its easier to rank a site higher on google if the keyword is in the domian name.
Thats why you see alot of carpet-cleaning-crapsville.com etc etc
For example, if you cover manchester, liverpool and newcastle (wow alot of milage!) then its easier to have three websites, one for each area than to have one mega site covering all three areas.
Plus, if the said keyword is also mentioned a few times in the body of the website/alt tags etc then even better. Easier and more natural thing to do on a site dedicated to that city/town.

yeah get that mate ... might check the availability of carpet cleaning crapsville! lol
ok ... so you want a few keyword domain names linked back to one site can you do that ???
or do google penalise you for that so it may effect your rankings?
-
Do you mean if you owned those other websites? and you want them to all link to each other?
As long at the C class and the IP addresses are different then its no problem.
You can set that up in your hosting package, so you can still host all the websites on one hosting account but asign a different ip address to each site. Costs a bit extra though.
Some people say that it can harm your rankings if you link a few sites together on the same ip address.
I used to have over 30 websites that where all linked together and they all got wiped off google about 2 years ago. After alot of investigating i can only put it down to the interlinking i was doing.
To be honest, if you just going to have 2 or 3 other carpet cleaning websites then you should be ok, google will just ignore these links. You can get alot of links from other places though...

Hi Paul,
Yes you can.
I have www.glasgowpressurewashing.co.uk
www.pressurewashingglasgow.co.uk
www.stonecleaningglasgow.co.uk
All pointed to my main site..
Depends on what company host your site too, my host only allows 4 ''parked'' domains on the package im on..
hope that helps...and no, google dont penalise you...as far as i know....

Dawg no mate the other way around
3/4 domain names all going to one site..?

matt
yeah thats the idea mate..

oh I get ya now!
Yeah that fine, you wont do any harm. Infact its a great way to test advertising reponse!

from what ive been told all the info given on this thread is in googles line of fire, there not keen on ghosting and place named urls, but i could be wrong.

If you want to set up different domain names on one host to save faffing about and keeping costs down then that's fine. Some hosting companies let you have as many domains as you like and you are only limited by space.
On the other hand if you are looking to pass juice along the line with semantically related domains to improve your rankings, whilst you can do this to a point, if you start creating link wheels etc you will get found out. As carpet dawg has said you need separate c class IPs, but you will still leave a footprint if you use Analytics for instance or have your domain owner details public.

Wynne,
I heard recently that Google is a registered domain name supplier (enob?) so they have access to registration data and can see who is behind private registrations.
Paul, I may have misunderstood something here. Why do you want to have different domain names pointing to the same site (i.e. what are you trying to achieve)?

Just as well I don't get involved in such activities then. ;)

derek has is it kind of right. google have made a change earlie this year to remove the extra benefit keyword rich domain names gave.
they also don't like ghosting, but having more then one website address that redirects to the same one is not ghosting and fine and often done. it's not really worth doing for seo purposes though but instead to have shorter names e.g. say your domain name is www.ilovetocleanyourcparetsinyourdomestichouse.co.uk, this wont work well on a van, so you'd buy www.ilovecleancarpets.co.uk and put that on the van and then it'd redirect the visitor to the main site.
best to ask who you're currently hosted with and i'm sure they'll be able to help, if not then switch to a better one.
