is when the sun starts to set later ... only by a few minutes per day but they all add up  ;)

Def the 22nd - my wedding anniversary - always around that time

End of the world 21st Dec 2012 - does that mean i dont have to buy the wife a present next year or book a meal out ?  ;D

and the funny thing is on the  3rd of jan is when we are closest to the sun ???

He's talking about sunset times, not day length.  Sunset times do get later from the 18th, but the day length is still getting shorter till the 22nd (sunrise is getting later faster than sunset is for a few days - in fact, sunrise latest is about the 30th December).
