Title: IS 0.00 TDS REALLY NECESSARY FOR CLEANING WINDOWS?
Post by: Ben Walker on November 30, 2005, 05:58:51 pm
just wondering if low tds, for example what you get after RO, is actually just as good.

Is having 0.00 tds not just a bit of an obsession.

i mean whats left after RO might not make a jot of difference to windows. the odd chlorine molecule or two! isn't the important thing just to remove the larger particles?

cheers

You can clean upto a reading of 015 ppm, thou its always best to clean with a reading of 000 ppm.

I would only use the higher reading if you are abit experinced in cleaning with a wfp this way if you get any spotting/runs you can rule out the water quality and start looking at your technique or equipment ( clean brush ).

I've used it in the high teens, and once or twice in the 20's :o

It still came out ok, but I was washing and rinsing a lot more than normal to be safe.

My R/O membranes needed replacing, was going through resin very quickly and sometimes didn't realise how high the reading had got!

But the purer the water the better, why risk it when there is no need to do so?

I managed to put 650ltrs of water in my tank at 37ppm without realising, only had one complaint out of about 35 houses. When I went bak to sort it out it wasn't really too bad and you had to look to see the spots, the lady only saw them as the sun was coming straight through her kitchen window while she was washing up, I bet you could get away with it at this time of year.

You can quite easily manage on up to 10TDS, and even at a push (Although I never have!) up to 20 TDS.

BUT.............

You will always find it easier and quicker to clean the windows when it is 000TDS.

Simple chemical fact.

Might as well keep it as low as you can.I used to use three 25ltr tanks of resin every 3 weeks costing £300.00 each time.I have a merlin now and one tank is still reading 000 after 6 months if i still used resin it would have cost £2,400 in the same time by using resin alone.

I got a few beers in me so no offence intended !
Listen , if your on RO why cut corners with the TDS readings , imean , your resin must last for donkeys ! , im DI only and i wont opperate with anything less than 000 TDS , my tap TDS is 100 so i get through a bag of resin a month , well i should anyway , but my superior brain has invented a pre filter system which treats 16000 L to 000 TDS per bag of resin , anybody with a calculator will be able to work out that this is 10000 L more than i should be getting !
Anyway stop being so tight and give those customers of yours a bit of value for money ! , and remember , ELMO IS THE KING !

Remeber TDS is 'Total Dissolved Solids' The higher the reading the higher the residue. It's as simple as that!

If you're happy with odd spots that you're customers are unlikely to notice then I'd sugest you can get away with 010 - 020.

Otherwise you may as well do it properly with 0!

Mike

I like 000 but if the last tank before the resin exhausts reads 001 or 002 I'll still use it.
