Thinking of buying a new to me Peugeot Expert HDI.
It has 74k on clock on a 04 plate.
£2200.
Are these vans reliable?

Peugeot make the best diesel engines in the world, bar none.
Its the rest that's the problem. They tend to suffer with finnicky little bits, poor finishing if you like.
If its an 04 plate, it would be around the time that DPF started to come into production, but it was an option for the first few years. If it has a DPF (diesel particulate filter), then you need to be aware that it needs to go on a regular long run at 50mph+ to burn off the soot etc in the filter. If its not DPF, that's a good thing.

Used to have one for the window cleaning side of things.
It would set off each day with 500kg in it and id well enough. Only 2 faults, one was the speedo stopped working (£500) and when the battery went flat it b.uggered up the anti theft device in the fuel injection pump.
But overall it was a good work horse.

Cheers for the input.

I had a Scudo for many years, obviously different engine etc but same body. Was a P plate so maybe a generation or two older than this one.
As Ash says, it's all the niggly little things that start to add up and annoy you.
Water got in round the aerial and filled the headlining - used to get dripped on from the sun visor fixtures and out of the interior light!
Door locks got worn and packed up
Door seals let in water and you have to break in to it with a kettle of water on frosty mornings
The nearside back door wouldn't stay closed properly, as soon as you went over a bump it opened slightly which sucked diesel fumes into the van
The back-lights in the dashboard display all gradually failed one by one - at night I only ever knew what speed i was going if it was over 80 :)
The kn0bs for the heater/fan controls all snapped off
The heater never used to get hot, very chilly in winter!
The mirrors break easily if clouted on/by passing cars
The gear linkage had to be replaced, it collapsed whilst in 2nd gear one day, luckily that meant I could limp it to the garage!
Clutch went after about 80k but it used to tow a trailer so maybe not fair to say the clutches are bad.
One extremely GOOD thing about my scudo - I'm not sure if the peugot and citroen vans are the same but I presume so... its body panels are made of what I guess is anodised steel. No rust. Whatsoever. I wish transits were the same :(

Fact of the matter is, whatever van you ask about people will give you their negative views and experiences. Plus of course, there's the risk of getting a friday afternoon van - whatever model it is you're screwed.
As long as it's a straight van, they're certainly no worse than any other van on the road.

So apart from that it was ok then :D

Very true Ash :)
I have to say on the whole even though that van had a pretty hard life it served me well. Those were just the niggly things that went wrong!

I have to say Jim, of that whole list the thing that shocked me most was...

I had a Citroen Dispatch on a 52 reg when i was mobile car valeting. It was a good van for the load i had in it...400 ltr water tank, gene, petrol pressure washer & valeting bits & bobs &(carpet cleaning bits), but the only things that when wrong was the speedo like Jims and the headlights kept on blowing so i sold the van and bought a citroen berlingo 6 months down the line the speedo stop working it must be a French thing...Sold it and got a Transit Connect (swb) the best van by far ive had....The next van will be the nissan nv200.....(Richard).

;D ;D I have an old peugeot expert and ive had all the above problems, great engine though (touch wood)

I could get 110 out of it ;)
It was the 1.9 turbo version. Such a stark contrast - all those silly niggly things going wrong and breaking yet the engine was strong as an ox, never skipped a beat, never failed to start and still ran like new even with 160k on the clock
Funniest thing about that van was that I scrapped it, but then kept seeing it driving round with the signwriting picked off, copper tubing strapped to the roof! Somewhere round here there is a plumber who gets very cold & wet in winter!
Crooked scrap dealer!!!

Like most vehicles now is the electrics that start to fail and cost money to replace or repair.
110 mph ;D

I think Jim has listed all potential problems . Why leaking ariel is unique to model I do not know but i can not solve it.
Yes clutch tends to go at 80K, Cam Belts but also get other belts replaced, at same time as if they break they fly into cam belt.
Also you need to know break history etc
Spedo also unreliable as Niel says
I think problem is in todays world repairs at garages work out £500 seems to be a target figure
-
Another thing about driving one of these vans - whenever you get into any other vehicle, you can NOT stop yourself fumbling round in the door pocket for the handbrake!! :D :D
(do the newer models still have the handbrake on the wrong side?)

I have a 2008 expert 2.0 hdi fantastic van. Never had a problem with it. ;)
