any one else finding that after 15 years carpet cleaning is killing their back?
-
I had a back operation a few years ago as I had a really bad back and sciatica.
I use a Tens Machine from LLoyds Pharmacy which I place the pads on my back and use a lot of the time.
It puts in small pulses of something which gives your brain other sensations rather than just the back pain. It really helps me.
Its aboyt £8.00, and after the pads have been used a lot and loose their "stickness", you can buy replacement pads for it.

Glad you're getting relief from the little Tens machine unfortunately it only gives temporary relief just co codamol or any pain relief product would. If you have recurring pain the source of the pain must be correctly adressed or it will keep coming back and due to muscle pulling when they should be relaxing WEAR will be taking place which will result in arthritis and possibly surgery at a later date.
If you've already had surgery but continue to get pain I'd be concerned.

Welcome to the bad back club gained from cleaning carpets over many years.
Only solution is to manage it by whatever means possible. For me thats employing a helper and doing daily exercises and going to a chiropractor every so often.

Sorry but have to disagree about using chiropractors. There are some around who might be genuine but there are many cases of damage done by and even fatalities as a result of bad chiropractic practice.
Osteopaths are safe and less likely to damage your body and their are other therapists who don't unnecessarily force your body to comply usually causing more pain and ensuring you'll return again and again and again.
Don't understand why you had an operation for sciatica which is very easy to deal with in just a few minutes.

Don't understand why you had an operation for sciatica which is very easy to deal with in just a few minutes.
so why are so many people suffering from sciatica? if it only takes a few minutes to deal with
please rell me what you would do it a few minutes?
-
I suffered for about 40 years and an osteopath did enough to get me back on my feet but it kept returning as the root problem was nor being addressed ...............osteo's and chiro's are not trained in a particular and very simple realignment lechnique.
I had to travel to London when no one was able to deal with me after spinal compression set in.
He used this simple technique which he'd used for some time on sciatica sufferers and resolved their problems in one visit but asked them to return and be taught to deal with the problem themselves thereafter.
In my case I saw this gent about 7 or 8 years ago and have never needed to attend a therapist since. Not something I can easily post about but can give the name of the man to anyone who e mails me

Hi Robert
Could you explain the differences between a chiropractor Osteopaths, and Bowen therapist
I did go to a Chiropractor , and I think he missed a more serious condition as to why my neck was stiff
Also he calls himself Doctor
-
On the whole my back is fine, but ive only been doin this work for 2 years. My main problem is pain in my shoulders.Presume its because of repetative use of the wand.

Ian, most back pain is caused by muscles in tension when they should be relaxing and the reason for them being in tension had to be dealt with or nothing changes.
Both chiro's and osteo's use manipulation to force movement within the skeleton osteo's are more gentle in what they do and less likely to cause damage.
It's just luck if you come across a good manipulative therapist and there are good chiro's but most follow the party line which is not to resolve a problem but to have you believe you'll require their services for life.
There are other therapies which use minimal force, quite literally what's known as eyeball pressure ( the amount of pressure you could bear on your eye if closing it and pressing on the closed eye with a finger. Not a lot !
I trained originally in Bowen which uses minimal force on certain points / muscles around the body and can be very effective for many people. Some have difficulty in accepting that because there's no dramatic force or pain involved and Bowen therapists rubbish the stupid " no pain no gain " nonsense that some others come out with.
There have been over 200 cases of chito's being taken to court for injuries caused and fatalities have occurred when carrying out a particular move around the neck / base of skull which I believe is no longer recommended.
When I suffered what felt like every muscle in my back pulling at once and extreme pain - similar to sciatica but much worse and running down the back of both legs - I was told by everyone I contacted that nothing could be done other than high risk surgery as I had spinal compression.
The man I mentioned in London offered to see me the following morning when I phoned saying he could help and he did in just a few minutes and I went back down and trained in his techniques which have kept me working and returned my flexibility and got rid of my pain, not literally as my spine is badly worn in areas

Shoulder pain my burden at moment anyone recommend any good excercises?

I have been seeing a osteopath for over 10 years for a bad back from being on the wand all day, i've bought glides for the wand, bought an evalution light weight wand and still the back pain was there. In june this year i came across by chance a network Chiroprator and what a difference it has made, alot of the tension has gone now although not perfect but its so much better. would highly recomend. Its releasing tension by touching certain nerve areas, no hard back cracking stuff.

Don't understand why you had an operation for sciatica which is very easy to deal with in just a few minutes.
TOSH!
I think that is an ingnorant question. If you had felt my pain you would have got to the specialist sooner than I did. I could hardly walk, let alone work!
The operation opened up the nerve canals that go through to the legs. It's in no way perfect, but without it, either I would be in what I consider extreme pain/agony, (different for different people), or I would have topped myself as I couldn't see any future for me.
Thats how bad it can be...
-
I've had sciatica for 6 months now.
I take declofenic 3 times a day which keeps the pain away.
When the pain kicks in, I can't walk from the bedroom to the bathroom for a pee.
I think I've got quite a high pain threshold, but I wouldn't wish sciatica on my worst enemy.

I didnt read much of those links but from what I did it all seems a bit new age.
What did they actually do.
Thanks
Mark

I wish you well Steve.
You have to have had it to have any idea as to the grim pain that it can cause.
-
Robert your condemnation of chiropractors is outrageous, there are millions of people all over the world getting great results inc myself, everyones got a story,i swear by my chiro,to condem all of them and even mention fatalities is cobblers
-
It's easy enough to verify the truth about chiropractic as it's well documented.
As I said if anyone has been lucky enough to find one who works along more acceptable McTimoney chiropractic way they should find it less aggressive and more bearable than trditional chiropractic which is brutal and potentially damaging.
Benny
I only speak from experience and a fair bit of knowledge including my own experiences with the NHS and a sister who was mis diagnosed over 40 years and received surgery which should never have been done . That was a surgeon's comments when she was correctly diagnosed with a worn hip socket and needing a replacement.
Sciatica is a term for pressure on a nerve or nerves and is easily released. That's why I wonder why you required surgery unless you had another problem unrelated to sciatica.
Don't get upset by a post questioning if you actually needed surgery when thousands are incorrectly diagnosed every year and thousands more fail to get the attention they would receive if they were a footballer or could afford to pay for treatment.
Incidentally if you reckon sciatica is bad - and it is - it's like a slight twitch compared to spinal compression which stays with you 24 hours a day and puts people in wheelchairs .
I only post with a view to helping ::) ::) ::)

Suffered for year with a bad back from Decorating since starting Carpet Cleaning I have found my back is a lot better.
Cheers Tony

Different muscle groups at work Tony.............you've addressed the problem by strengthening ( inadvertently ) the weaker muscles which has religned your spine.
-
i have used a device called the bacnumptyber - dont laugh!
apply pressure to the area of the back that hurts- does seem to help by apparently working on trigger points in the muscles
-
that should read bacnumptyber

Hi
Having had a prolapsed L5 disc in 1999 i have also suffered back pain (didn't know if I'd walk agaian)
With Sciatica it may not be that at all!
It will more than likely be your Piriformis muscle in your bum cheeks:
The Piriformis muscle is one of the small muscles deep in the buttocks that rotates the leg outwards. It runs from the base of the spine (the sacrum) and attaches to the thigh bone (femur) roughly where the outside crease in your bum is. The sciatic nerve runs very close to this muscle and in some people (around 10% of the population) it passes straight through the muscles' fibres! If the piriformis muscle becomes tight it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause pain which can radiate down the leg, commonly known as sciatic pain (see sciatica). It has been suggested that this condition would be better referred to as piriformis impingement due to the impingement of the sciatic nerve.
A common cause of Piriformis syndrome is having tight adductor muscles (inside your thigh). This means the abductors on the outside cannot work properly and so put more strain on the Piriformis.
Symptoms of piriformis syndrome:
Tenderness in the area of the muscle.
Pain in the buttocks.
Pain which radiates down the back of the leg, usually into the hamstrings and sometimes even the calf muscles.
It is common for pain to initially be confused with a hamstring strain or hamstring origin tendinopathy. However there will be no area in the hamstrings which is tender to touch.
Reduced range of motion of the hip joint, especially into internal hip rotation.
For those who have Sciatic issues, go to a sports massage therapist and suffer no more, same for those of you with shoulder pain. Don't forget you are constantly tensing your muscles while you are doing your job.

Lynn has suffered from back problems for over 15 years. She used to visit a Chiropractor twice a week at 30 quid a shot. They told her she would eventually reduce her visits to monthly then 6 monthly. Never happened after 2 weeks she had to go back again the pain was so bad. I was getting a bit sick of this and couldn't understand how some quack could manipulate your back and exepect it to heal. Proof is in the pudding after 12 years it was no better in fact getting worse. She took up pilates 2 years ago and you would not believe the difference. She has never been back to a Chiropractor and suffers no pain in her back whatsover. She has now even started doing 3 classes of Zumba a week which wouild have been unthinkable.
Don't think this is just for the ladies, there are plenty men in her Pilates class including semi pro footballers.
-
semi pro footballers!!!!! You mean the newcastle first team!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

I think the worst thing for your back is being hunched over a desk all day. At least we get out and about and strengthen our core and have greater range of movement.
Wanding is good for you but some people over extend the stroke which in years to come will bite you.

Interesting reading, I dont suffer from a bad back but my wife does, badly, my house looks like a pharmacy the gp has given her so many different drugs over the past 10 months, none of which made very much difference.
She is in so much pain that she rarely sleeps through the night and I often find her sitting at the computer at 2,3,4 in the morning, and most of the time she walks like she has a wooden leg!
An MRI scan she had a bout a month ago shows she has and I quote " a broad disc bulge L4-5, with probable nerve root pressure" and has been told that the best thing for her is to have surgery.
Funnily enough a letter came in the post today for her appointment to see the neurosurgery team, scares the crap out of me, having someone touch my spine is enough for me so the thought of someone operating on it would fill me with dread, but I am not the one in constant pain.

Funny I was thinking of going to pilates. For me I find doing situps and strenghing the stomach muscles helps me. Also trying to keep the weight off helps too.

I suffered years of bad back, eventually leading to bad spasms that required taking Diazapam to relax.
Then after another episode I went to Chiropractor and after 3 or 4 visits decided to stop. My back although stiffening up a bit occasionally has never gone into bad spasm since.
However one thing I did, which I think has made all the difference and eased the pressure of the job on my back is - I raised the tube handle on my wands and repositioned it just a couple of inches below the top bend. This gives a much more upright working position.

I to have a bad back /stiff neck and i have found that using a 360i rotovac has helped a lot as i now clean in a up right position
-
I used to have a lot of lower back pain after carpet cleaning. I bought an "Evolution" wand just over 2 years and the problem is much improved. :)

Pilates is excellent and can correct pelvic distortions and build the muscle groups to maintain the correction in a similar way to the simple treatment I 've posted about.
the email address for the gent who helped me when the rest of the world said it couldn't be done is
alexalign.uk@googlemail.com
his site may seem to be full of waffle, but it's his take on life.............just scroll down the left to find pelvic corrector which is a device that allows you to correct and maintain the problem.
In the case of c/c it would be sensible to modify how you work and how you lift items.
