I just run a small oil filled heater in the back of the van, I also have a Mr Heater that runs off propane and use that through the day. I've never heated water in 9 yrs. If it's that cold, I tend to have a day at home.

Oil filled rad with a timer for me - also bring in my hose reel, poles etc into house at night - from experience it's a pain in the arse when your pipes have frozen - an old duvet over/around the tank and filters/RO too

I put an immersion heater into my tank, haven't used it yet.

When it turns cold I intend to have it on overnight with 1/2 a tank of water. Then I can top it up if necessary.  I'll only be doing the monthly's and if it's stays below freezing I'll be taking the day off

Good post this is especially after last years worst winter for 30 years. I too take Merlin, poles, hoses and di inside house when its about -5 its a pain but works. I also put a fan heater in van via an extention lead. I'm optimistic though that this winter will be a stroll in the park compared to last years!!!

my van has a heater built in on the dashboard, I turn it on when I start the engine in the morning  :D
but seriously insulate behind the ply in your vans and inside the roof with foil bubble wrap or something, it will be warm enough all day.
Cant run a lead out to my van so never heated it overnight, 650ltr of water never froze on me yet in 8 years, fill up in the morning if its a worry.
All that stays in my van is tank , pump, hose reel and poles and its quite easy to protect them from freezing either by draining them (and setting everything up quick release - no jubilee clips) or priming with antifreeze overnight.

Oil filled radiator left on all night.if its forecast minus 5 or 6 or lower then two aquarium heaters dropped into top lid of tank as well.an old duvet over the top of tank.

Trolley,di,reel brought inside for the night.
