Title: PPE Advice

Hi All

I have job coming up in New Year where I need to renovate a floor in an operating theatre.  This will involve removing the grout .  I have no problem with this as I am going to use floor saws with vacuum take off.  However I was wondering what any knowledgable people or experts would reccommend regarding PPE.  I was thinking Tyvex Suit, Respirator, Eye Protection ang gloves any pointers or help regarding specific PPE?  Would be greatly appreciated

You've got it covered there Kev apart from ear defenders!!!. Going to get loud in there when you start!!

Hi Kevin

We also do floor restoration in  operateing theaters over here
ppe never really a problem there main concern is always dust.
dust control is upmost importance
after that getting finished in the time set out at the start.

both never really a problem with proper orgaination and tools.

the biggest problem is always getting rid of grinding slurry and getting it out side
into a ciontainer we use motor tubs which is than disposed in a skip with no holes

a lot of carrying bucket of slurry up and down stairs,
if you can get them, get buckets with lids so there is no spillage

  hope there is something here that you can use

A long time ago I did some work on a hydrated lime spill at a Tarmac operation.

I put in, what I thought was a crazy price (at the time it was!) to get the work. £500.00 per day, per man.

We had Tyvex suit, eye defence, gloves and everything necessary apart from the mouth defence.

We used the paper mouth covers - big mistake.

When hydrated lime picks up any moisture it turns to acid and it will and did burn on every surface it got on that got wet. We sweated profusely in the suits and round the neck and wrists the lime got through, Wow that stuff can burn.

I obviously breathed a great deal in and although I would say that it hasn't affected my life I have lost 25% of my lung capacity and wease a lot of the time.

Never ever compromise on PPE. The £500.00 per day we found out should have been several thousand pounds per day to deal with the spillage properly.
