Yes I would wait. We may turn the corner in 5 to 10 years so I would think about starting then.

Why not canvass before you do anything! I did many years ago, then work out if it's worth the investment. Started Trad, moved to WFP about 4 yrs later, 15 yrs down the line.

ive got quite a nice round at the moment mate, but my missus is coming to work with me, at the moment we have canvassed twice for two hours all together from leaflets gone out in that time and customers taken on we have got about £200 of monthly work, so i think as good as it has ever been, i would say in this day and age you should for every 20 houses that are in you would expect to get a customer now on a week day it will take you all day to get 100 customers in, however on a saturday etc much shorter time, and if there is two of you probably have a nice few houses coming in, we do, this was that same when my dad was canvassing 30 years ago, when my brother was 15 years ago and still the same as i am, the ratio for us has never changed , if you want to build a round and knock on a lot of doors, you will have a round simple as that, all a numbers game, i have no doubt whatsoever that you will be able to build a round in this climate

If you want to test the water why not start off part time while still keeping your main job?
That way you have not really got anything to lose.
