Can anyone point me to a company/person that can check my heat exchanger and perhaps braze/weld a small leak.
-
Any motor garage should be able to do that, or a decent plumber.
-
Just out of curiosity, is that the problem you were having the other day?
-
No. The problem other day was on my other truckmount, faulty reading on temp guage. It was an easy fix. A new temp sensor. I have a unit stripped and nealy ready for rebuld but i think the heat exchanger has a small leak so wondered if anyone knew who welded em if needed. I am going to pur some quick onnectors on it and connect to pressure hose on my other unit to see if there is a leak.

Repairing a copper heat exchanger is very difficult, by way of brazing, believe me I've tried it. Getting enough heat into it is a problem as is soldering. I've tried it on two. One split around the brass nuts, in the end I had to buy a new one.
The second time, the exchanger around the exhaust split due to ice, leaving a two inch long crack. I couldn't afford to buy a new one,so I did the following;
Firstly make a sleeve from stainless steel sheet plate, roll it around the exchanger to get the right shape, smother the area and sleeve using "wet grab" and then clamp the sleeve around the exchanger and leave to dry solid. The either end of the sleeve use a jubilee clip, just for extra strength.
You can remove any mess or excess, using WD40. I've had no problems with it holding since.

I've posted a few times about a place in Sheffield www.autorads.co.uk they have a sister company that repair then pressure test them and they are excellent but you do have to send them away takes approx a week.

Is that place in Sheffield reasonably priced Shaun?

Is was far cheaper than a new hx but they said that they could do it with confidence, one of the owners kids goes to the same school as mine and when talking to him I felt confident that he knew his business and also he offered a decent price.
