Title: anyone got a diesel hot water system?
Post by: dazmond on November 01, 2011, 07:43:50 pm
im thinking when i get another van next year ill get a pure freedom isothermal heater installed through the fuel tank.i dont want to be messing about with gas bottles and vents.

i know their pricey but has any of you guys got one?

if it really does speed up cleans and helps in winter then i think itll pay for itself in a couple of years.

this year ill be sticking with my cold system for now.

many thanks

whats wrong with gas? £200 compared to nearly £3k, you have got to be nuts to go with that price!

ive had my fogwash a year now, and can highly recommend it, i used it today to remove egg, was really helpful!

I'm confused. What's the messing about with gas bottles and vents?

Never understood why on earth anyone would want to spend thousands on a system that basically does the same, and arguably better.

Maybe go out with someone who's got a Fogwash first?

Ive used hot for over 3 yrs ( gas )
I use it on all jobs all year round, wouldmt be without it.
But would i pay mearly 3 grand for the privelage, now way.
The gas heaters do everything the diesel ones do, heat water.

I have the purefreedom 9kw hot isothermal diesel heater with a frost stat fitted and it is the best hot system out there believe me!!!! Gas is a cheap and effective way to do it though if your on a tight budget. For me though I am glad I went with pure freedom and it is very cheap on the diesel usage. If your after a professional job then go for pure freedoms . The gas ones are good but do they come with a frost stat, what happens if your gas canister runs out on a cold day?!? see sense and go for purefreedom , you won't regret it!!!!! ;D

You seem pleased with your setup, but gas is cheaper. If I run out on Diesel I need to visit the petrol station, same with lpg, no problem there? Especially with my safefill I can see how much lpg I have got left, because it's refillable I can refill it even when 70% full. Most refillable lpg tanks have got some sort of gauge on it. No getting caught out.
Frost stat can be fitted as well. Can you name one advantage of a Diesel heater over a gas heater? As far as I know gas heats the water up faster as well, I get incredibly scalding hot water so quickly. Fogwash is 12Kw if I remember. I can't think of a reason to spend that much more and to get the same or less in value. What's the point in that?

In fact, no supplier I know has ever taken the time to list the benefits of Diesel over Gas. I'm serious, I want to know why a supplier wants me to spend thousands more on a system. Come on Brodex, come on Purefreedom or whoever, give me the advantages.

at least we can have another argument instead of wfp vs trad - diesel vs gas  ;D

In my opinion, a properly installed gas heater is no more dangerous than a properly installed diesel heater. The issue is that so many people with limited DIY skills try to install gas heaters where they simply wouldn't take a chance on a diesel one!

Diesel heaters also need a vent/exhaust,.. it just goes out through the floor instead of the roof.
Diesel heaters use a lot of battery power, so the running out of gas issue mentioned above could be compared to batteries going flat,.. it can be planned for & avoided.

The diesel heaters look good,.. but I'd rather have that extra £2500 in my pocket to be honest.

I'm working on a flow controller with integrated frost stat (That will work with gas heaters) at the moment,..

I'll post details as soon as its ready.  ;)

Easy to install if you know how to bolt and tighten screws/bolts. It's so simple a 10 year old could do it.
Fogwash in operation is this. Flow starts, ignitor fires, flames heat water, water comes out hot. You turn the flow off, the hotwash stops. Simple.

You need a refillable lpg tank, and you can fill them up anywhere that sells lpg.

I have a Fogwash but don't need to use it very often. I've seen the Pure Freedom up close and it's brilliant. However the cost is too high for me to warrant buying one. If you are sure you'll use one everyday then get it but otherwise take the cheap option.

its a bit big (100mm diameter x 2m length) its the very flexible stuff, like thick foil, but very bendy unlike the hard alternative.
its £14.95 but i had mine for £10

but it comes with a big jubilee clip, i might need to do a bit of fettling to it still, it goes through a hole in the floor which was installed to allow the water in and water out for the merlin. its kinda square too, which isnt ideal. im going to get a carbon monoxide alarm as well.

its being supported at the top by a small black bungee cord

peter fogwill back support is awesome too, i lost the drain plug for it, and he sent me a new one in a few days!

Does the vent work ok? I thought hot air would rise rather than sink through the floor.

Hi mate i have not got one yet but you can get them of ebay for around £30
and i was told it would keep the water at a constant temp and make thd system more stable

Got thre PF 9kw system. The main advantage is I think they are the only company that have full hot controll on both pumps. i.e. i can run one pump hot and one luke warm if I wish. The installation and back up is first class and as for service as they are engineers they are the only window cleaning suppliers that can carry out service work.
Do you need to have the 'gas safe' certs to fit the gas systems?

I have the Purefreedom twin user as well, paid a lot for it but for me it's been money well spent, but can see why people would prefer a cheaper option too, down to personal choice me thinks.

Make a plywood bracket (4 fogwash) and mount it on the back door(s) with self tappers, that way the C.O goes straight upwards with out poncing about with flue's ( btw peter reckons they dont like 90 degree bends?) - Ive got 1 on each back door, to feed each hose reel (via flow controllers). You CAN split 1 hotwash between two reels, but if one man turns his tap off, then your temp will rise. No worries in summer but maybe in the winter!, and thats why i bought another one. Also tim above come up with a good idea of fitting temp gauges to your poles as a precaution, which im now doing, its my first winter so im worried about cracking glass. Watch this space.

TBH I don't think their are any advantages as such to diesel over gas. However I have no regret with my purefreedom hot 9kw heater with its smart digital display. would recommend them to anyone. Its your call dazmond.... Purefreedom hot or an l5 heater both good and both do the same job to be fair , only one of them is more professional looking and will cost alot more but you will have peace of mind that the frost stat is reliable and the guys in Grimsby will always be willing to help. Or if you go for the l5 you could be sorting out probs yourself all the time and on this forum asking for help. If your serious about your business then purefreedom pips it for me  ;D
