Title: CARPET SHADING ?

Have come across a number of carpets recently where "shading" has occurred. Not just traffic areas and near patio doors  but all areas of the carpet.
What is it ? How does it occur ? and is there any way of curing the problem ?
Cleaning the area does'nt help !
Any suggestions would be appreciated, so I can pass it on to the customer.
