Sounds like wear.
Had a carpet yesterday which looked green at a distance but upon closer inspection also had a darker fibre within it.
The high taffic areas at the sofas where almost black in colour even after cleaning. However there was no dirt transfer unto a white cloth. Therefore my conclusion is that the green fibres have worn down to leave the darker fibres more visable but makes the carpet seem dirty but its not.
Problem is trying to explain all this to the customer AFTER the cleaning :'(

Would this be what they call apparent soiling?
-
could be browning, damage from sunlight or like he said dye wear
-
Yes thats right it sounds like apparent soiling, nothing you can do it happens on nylon carpets they should be banned can't beat wool. Tell your customer to buy quality next time and it sounds like they should take their shoes off. 8)

Thanks for your replys, customer spent £1100. on carpet 4 years ago so not cheap. Cleaned with Texatherm today, pads showing high level of soiling but carpet still brown in walways very odd.....Simon

I posted about this last week but it disappeared. The wool used in the majority of dark carpets is originally brown. The white wool you usually associate with sheep is primarily used for clothing etc as it takes the lighter dyes.
What has probably happened here is abrasion, due to the heavy soiling, has worn the fibres beyond the dye take and is exposing the original colour of the wool. Common problem in heavy wear situations.

Is the carpet the same dark green as under the sofa, in the corners of the room and in the non tyraffic areas ? Probably not from what you describe. I would therfore guess that it is colour loss from sunlight fading the carpet, that is your customers problem. A simple ligh fastness test from am offcut would resolve this THis can be performed by RBI in kidderminster.
