Title: Still leaving streaks...
Post by: Glen on October 28, 2011, 11:20:37 pm
I did a house with relatively small sliding sash windows today. On each pane there was a significant overlap of the squeegee and on the second pass it left streaks due to the drag. Each pane had to be polished with steel wool to make it streak-free.

The mix I use is: four litres of water with a squirt of Unger liquid, squirt of Ecover washing-up liquid and a teaspoon of Easyglide.

What am I doing wrong?

If you're new to window cleaning and the squeegy, make sure you use a new blade each day; it'll help you work out whether it's the blade, or your technique that's to blame.

And have a look on youtube for how to use a squeegy.

And practise, practise, practise!  It really takes a few years to get really competent with a squeegy.

Oh, and just water and fairy liquid is great for squeegy work; also I'm not sure what the wire wool bit was about; just scrim off any imperfections.

Unger liquid!

Terrible stuff, I advise you stop using it. I once had to re-do some windows because of that stuff!

I found that on certain windows it would streak & even leave a white residue behind.

and if you take that advice send me the one day old rubbers please, I run a recycling centre for unused blades

I will put them to good use and make sure they get a happy home and I will not even charge you for it

I have a bottle of Unger Easy Glide in my garage - shocking stuff.
Why are you using such a complicated mix?

Steel wool is not quite strong enough mate, try a scourer or maybe even an angle grinder if the steaks persist ;)

If you have a considerable overlap, try a smaller sized channel.

Can't say I agree.... Unger liquid is by far the best stuff ever it don't just leave the glass clean it looks polished clean due to the low level of suds... I really believe this stuff is my edge over other windys!!! Try mixing it at 50ml to 5 litres of water on it's own ( use a washing machine measure cap) and the results are good most people over strength this liquid which may cause streaks n smears.. Wash your applicator sleeve free of any fairy or easy glide this easy glide or sorbo glide are the worst stuff you can use so leave it out.

I tried all those things, still no good.

So that's how you rid of smears  :D

Good rubber, dry flatweave microfibre, make sure ur soap solution is not too strong.
Best solution for me is a squirt of gg3 and squeegee off together.

Practice,practice,practice!

I do find trad a bit of a pain on cold, damp days though!the dampness makes it more difficult to detail effectively.

Used this liquid everyday for around 5 years without much fuss it's not as slippery as ettore or fairy I must admit but it don't carry the dirt and the dirt stays at the bottom of the bucket leaving cleaner water at the top.

I remember using fairy for around a year when I first started trad,my boab was really getting a dirty black grime colour and used to try cleaning it but not much joy... I kid you not after using neat unger for about 6 weeks of just working my kit looks brand-new again.

The solution is simple,.. go WFP!
 :P :P

No seriously,.. PRACTICE. I could clean a window using a bucked of muddy water & still get perfect results, its not down to any fancy mixture, its simply technique.

Steel wool is great for removing hard water stains, but for the odd streak all you need is a bit of scrim, much quicker & easier.

Steel wool :o
If the panes are that small just "rag" them

New rubbers can be a little sticky and take a little running in sometimes causing blade drag... you hit a dry spot on over lapping or fanning  and the squeegee handle can almost stop dead wanting to drag and hold back

was it a smear or a drag line?

sometimes its a small nick in the rubber that causes a drag

or the end of a new rubber sometimes leaves a little tag that can be pulled off :)

Unger liquid and Ecover? Using washing up liquid defeats the reason for using Unger Liquid. Also, washing up liquid degrades rubber quite quickly.

I tried Easy Glide for a few months once and found it does tend to also smear. (The best place to put easy glide is in with the windscreen wash in your car.)

If you don't get the same problem with other windows then maybe it could be something to do with what the windows were cleaned with previously. Maybe get a good hard surface cleaner and give the glass a once over first using a dirt cheap 99p shop brillo pad to remove anything left on the glass.

Wire wool though? All you need is one little bit of rust and you've scratched the glass with loads of tiny little scatches that you won't see but if the sun shines on it at the right angle, your customer will. Been there, done that, got the letter of complaint and paid for the replacement glass.
