Alright lads,
So its getting chilly ::)
What are your essential winter items for on cold days out on the windows?
What's just a waste of money?
This is my first winter (dont laugh) and so i need to buy some kit for the next few months as the shorts aint gunna cut it any longer.
Cheers,
Caleb

Good waterproof Boots!
Lots of layers to keep out the cold, Personnaly I wear roll top thermal shirts (ski type) underneath. I find that the less places heat can escape the better.
Buy a BUFF or two, best pieces of kit I have for winter ( got 4 of them). Thermal Polar Ones are brilliant!

And a decent waterproof jacket!
I wear Dickies Reaper trousers most of year, so hard wearing & comfy and look smart uniform too, they do a lined version I use in winter bout £17 from farmers suppliers.
Never wear Jeans, look scruffy and when wet/damp very heavy and uncomfy.
Your selling a professional service so look the part, in my opinion anyway. and all tax deductible work wear.
As a wise man once said 'There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes!'

Thermal long johns for the 5.30 starts!!!!!

Can't emphasise enough on BOOTS, BOOTS, BOOTS!!! Don't scrimp on them, spend as much as you can afford, as once your feet get wet, they stay wet, and then they get cold, and then you just want to go home.
Under armour type clothing is great, rather than thick layers, these are good at keeping you warm and retaining flexibity.
Hat or what I wear is a north face ear protecter, which keeps my lugs warm, but doesn't get me too hot.
Gloves...lots of debates on these in here already...
Oh, and a hot water system.

Good goretex boots
Really good waterproof gloves (search for "Youngstown Winter Waterproof" on ebay)
A warm hat that covers your ears
A scarf
A hot water system
Most importantly: The common sense to know when to go home. When the temp drops too far, nothing in the world will make your job more comfortable or safer,.. I've worked down to about -8 but even that was a bit of a struggle.

I buy cheap trainers and boots, 15 to 20 quid, last me 3 months tops. bought some 80 quid walking boots from a reputable high street outdoor shop. lasted 3 months, absolutely wrecked. I know I'm 15 and half stone and 6 foot 1, but surely should last longer? what do you do? if I say climb ladders what will they say? lorry drive I say(which I do a couple of days a week). ah, its pushing the peddles, they are not designed for that. no replacement or money back. don't know wot motto of story is! but u don't always get what you pay for.
good comfy shoes, or boots, waterproof. I wear jeans and thermals. lots of layers so can strip off when heat up. very good woolly hat. and determination! bring a flask, lots of hot drinks, and be prepared to call it a day when its too bad, be realistic!

I wear these when I'm out cycling through the depths of winter, they also come in handy when cleaning, keeps you nice and toasty http://www.prendas.co.uk/details.asp?typ=typ&fkid=22&ID=367

Waterproof boots plus these: http://www.silvermans.co.uk/AdvancedSearch/tabid/96/Default.aspx?Search=06001 (available in Black). Cheap, warm and comfortable.
And these for when it's REALLY cold. Bit bulky at other times, but workable: http://www.intersafety.co.uk/pr-showa-460-insulated-cold-store-gloves/p00400000901472c
