My competitors new site,
"2 carpets for the price of 3"
And he has knocked me off the top of Google
;D

Good for him, that's what you call solid competition. Now it's down to you to compete accordingly :D
-
How did he get there so quick?
Shaun
-
No clues about the site and the first two links I clicked are dead ends.

The way I like to think of it is smooth seas do not make a skillful sailor, it will up your game. On the other hand you could go round and torch his van. :D

I wouldn't worry about it, the website is crap and people won't stay on it for long.

Simon
Yeah, he's the first on Google and with those prices they will be straight on the phone.
-
People aren't always attracted by low prices, far from.
Simon
-
He's bottom of page 1 for carpet cleaners Halifax on my iPhone
Maybe it's your browsing history affecting what you see mark?
-
His site isn't easy on the eye that's for sure. Getting no1 again for all your key phrases is important especially if they don't trigger maps.
-
Wynne,
How do you get key phrase to trigger maps?
Simon
-
It's the other way around Simon.
Google decide which phrases trigger maps. Most reasonably populated areas trigger a map, but it depends on competition density and lots of other factors we are not party to. So there's little point putting in a lot of time on google maps if your main phrases don't trigger one (but most do now).

PR3? my son has a PS3 will that help?
actually how do you know or find out what your own PR is?
Shaun
PS you're a good un Paul ;)

Now do me, now do me! :)

Cheers for the info, have to work on getting that up!

I must say, that is the kind of deal I could get used to doing, sod Groupon!!

To increase page rank you need to A) constantly update your site, and B) increase the amount of incoming backlinks.
PR is mainly a measure of "linkback worthy-ness". For example a PR5 site owner would think twice about exchanging links with another site that has a PR2.
-
Morning Mark I looked at his Gallery picture and i dont think most people would know what they were looking at as it is pants............Alan
-
I think his site has too much process naming which most customers are not interested in. They are buying clean carpets not carpet cleaning.
-
Mark,
I've looked at this with a "clean" pc today and it looks like as DaveP said, that you are getting false results.
You need to clear all of your cookies and browsing history.
Presuming we are talking about Halifax, I've got you at no.1 and the other down at the bottom (same as Dave).
You've both got poor backlinks (his are slightly more varied) but your on page optimisation is much better (which seems to be doing the trick).
-
Your number 1 here too Mark.
He is number 9.
Don't know what your PR is 'cos I don't know
know what PR is??
John
-
Hi Mark,
Dont worry you are still Number 1.
I am gradualy upgrading the sites, would you like a picture added.
Cheers

Thanks Doug ;)

Thanks for the info Paul, it does make you ponder a bit though when I look at google the adverts and maps take up so much of the screen that even a top free placement takes a bit of scrolling to get to.

Money does talk I agree infact the money in my pocket keeps saying "Goodbye"
Shaun
-
But maybe use something like this http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php
I used that for my area, so how come www.basingstokecarpetcleaners.co.uk comes up with a pr of zero yet is top of the natural listings?
-
So which cleaner has the highest PR? what are your sites showing?
I did do some playing and the NCCA had the highest, facebook got 10/10 which you would expect, ebay only got 6/10.

Hi Guys
Over the years it has become more and more evident that the url name is more important than anything else.
This was my main suggestion at the CCDO, last but one.
Marks site is top of Halifax because it has enough fire power, it doesn't have to be PR 5 plus a very strong name.
Cheers

Doug have you not heard that Google will be giving far less weight to domain name in the not too distant future?
-
Is that actual page rank or toolbar page rank we are talking about?
-
Wynne
There has been talk of that for years but the reality is that domains names containg key words are much easier to rank highly and probably always will be.
Cheers
Doug
-
The single, most important factor in ranking is........ RESOURCES.
-
Actually Doug,
I've put up sixteen small sites this week and everyone has a keyword in the URL. :)
-
Hi Garry
So you agree with me then!
Cheers
Doug
-
Yes,
As long as it is not the only weapon in the armoury.
As Wynne said, Google has declared war on exact match domains but we are yet to see massive differences.
I did however have an exact match one drop from 2 down to 9 following the Oct 13th re alignment. It's cost me some dosh!
-
I'm still doing this for local search and I'm also telling people to have a company name domain name which is something I used to say was a waste of time unless someone already knew you. But now that google seem to think brands are one way to sort out the crap it's probably a good way to hedge your bets for the future.
Also remember google want you to spend money, things like removing keyword data from analytics, ever expanding paid search blocks etc mean one day all your traffic may dry up unless you get your wallet out, so always have multiple ways to get traffic, just like you should for marketing leads.
-
What do you reckon Wynne, two separate domains (keyword and company name)?
-
Hi Guys
If you have a recognisable company name it must be worth having a domain name with it in.
I have always thought you should have as wide as exposure as possible so that changes which are out of your control are not too damaging.
In my view exact name domains are here to stay, although they may lessen in significance.
Cheers
Doug

Yep
And mobile may also make keywords with location in them far less useful. But you can only really do waht works now with an eye on what may or may not happen.
And the bit about analytics, you've probably done it but make sure all the keyword data you have collected is saved to a spreadsheet. It may disappear soon!
