Title: did i do the right thing
Post by: derek west on October 16, 2011, 04:03:31 pm
quoted a job over the phone, got there and proceeded to clean the bedroom stairs and landing, then walked into the living room and felt the carpet under my feet move, did a bit of skidding about and realised it was proper delaminated, told the customer that the scrim had come away from the hessian back, they questioned me so i showed them the ripples and lifted the carpet to reveal rotten hessian etc.... anyway i told them i was too concerned to go ahead with the clean as it may cause stretching and possible tearing (all though i doubt that but ya never know) and this may cause the carpet to look worse all though clean. anyway negotiated a price for what i'd done. and left.
was i right in being concerned, ive cleaned delaminated carpets before but only small areas have been delaminated and even then noticed excessive stretching, so i felt i had to walk from this one as i would say, 50% of the carpet, (4m x 4m) was delaminated.
would you guys of walked or cleaned with caution?

Best walking as you will be sucking the carpet back to your van

I would have loaded with customer and told them my concerns and then asked if they wanted me to proceed obviously at their risk, I have done a few mainly old people who hate replacing things because of the upheaval so you accommodate to suit the customers needs providing you feel confident and also passing the risk to them.

I'd do the same as Shaun - let them talk me in to doing it.

Hi Guys
Derek, you did the right thing because you walked away with your dignity intact, far more important than money.
Cheers

unfortunately i couldn't get permission to clean as it wasn't there carpet, it was a mid tenency clean, they rang the agents who tried to get in touch with the landlord but she wasn't answering. so i did give them the option with cautions in place. anyway, sounds like i did the right thing. phew.
