Some time ago Tosh did a 'challenge' based on a composite fishing pole.
I use a fishing pole for my shops and tall buildings.
Someone on here used expanding foam filler to fill up the inside of the pole or something, wondered if that worked alright or not.
Did it help? was it too heavy?

I used my fishing pole for several years when Tosh organised this challenge. I never found the neccessity to 'reinforce' the tubes with expanding foam filler. But my understanding was that some had used the filler to reinforce the ends - its wasn't for the hole inside of the pole.
As you appear to be working at much higher heights than I used it for, possibily the best person to 'chat' to would be Jeff Brimble as he knows the fishing pole situation intimately.
If you do a search on this forum, I think there was a discussion on how to get higher and what you would need.

There are new lighter poles with thinner walls, the foam can help with the upper sectionsBut its really messy, but its better to reuse older thicker poles approx 1999 approx, £20 good buy ! I use Ron thompson Gangster 11m cut down gives you 29ft useable.Its a tuffy.

When you say older poles do you mean older style poles or are there some second hand ones about?

Older style are thicker, not as stiff but light enough. Car boots are good and some fishing suppliers shops have s/h ones. What height do you want to reach ?
Got to go, to start use the Gangster- good for 3 floors, higher go for an old s/h 12.5m or 13.5m dont pay big money if you can find s/h, should get one for £50 if your lucky.

I do lots of work at about 40/45 feet and have a 16m pole for that.
Have bought an MAP M16 along with 3 extra butt sections as I have an even taller building I do at present with my 55 foot tucker (very very heavy) got these from cheshire fishing very helpful.
I use a Ron Thompson 8 mtr for the tops and then the lower sections of a 16mtr pole, so I have tough top and tough bottom, my problem is that at about what would be section 8 or 9 I have the thin type.
I will have a look around for older style poles as well always good to have spares.

In a nutshell, no answer, for the couple of sections before the extensions, just take care and bridge your hands. or save up for a Gardiner which maybe stronger, but they are all susceptable to breakages. I still have my original F16 and prefer it to the M16 as its not so mettallic. Oh you can mix and match any make of pole. So look on ebay etc.

I plan to tape a bag over the male end of a pole section I have spare and using a thin piece of plastic pipe fill up the section with foam.
I did something similar to fill an inaccessible hole under a cupboard when we had mice coming in. 3 foot length of old RO pipe on the end of the foam can, worked a treat.
I'll test on the spare and see how it goes.

Neat, put an airhole in the bag, you will also find if you try to do the whole pole in one go that the foam in the middle section wont go off because it "self seals" do it in 2-3 sections to allow air to allow it to set.

You will also need a tight fitting butt plug which you may be able to make using the tip of the next lower section and wrapping double thickness thin cling film round, also protect the tip end with pcv tape stuck on lengthways so that the foam dont stick to it or your going to have to sand it off after, think of having a Bin bag to place over the shopping bag if it all goes pear shaped. Work in 2-3ft sections and allow to dry. The foam you use wont go off in a void - it wont ! ever! but there is a foam available from a co. onj the E caost that will. I will try to find a link for a lengthways wrap that the Manuf use to strengthen the fishing poles from the outside. Maybe look at Daiwa/Maver for the number 8-9 sections instead. On day the fishing pole people will re tap into our market and give us the "Old style"and cheaper poles back again, they have more glass in them.

Had an interesting chat with Gary at Cheshire fixing he said that the Ron Thompson poles are a composite pole that have less carbon in. They are actually cheaper to make but they are heavier so less popular with the fishing crowd.

Having seen this post im thinking of maybe buying a fishing pole for a big office block I've got coming up very soon!! Don't see the point in me spending out £400+ on a high spec pole as i dont have the right work for it... I went round my brothers house yesters to have a look at some 11m and 13m poles he uses for fishing and boy these things are sooo light weight and stiff but almost like egg shells.
Can they take the odd knock here and there??
So I'm I right saying you foam out each section to help support the hollow inners??

The best poles for us are the thicker smooth ones called composites, the new style lighter ones are thinner, ideal for fishing but quite fragile.

Composites ok for lower heights but not for 60ft. 16m gives you 42ft your three extra extn sectionsx 5ft 5" = approx 57ft so its the height you need, the M16 will do it with a light brush.Yes you will need to take care, keep the pole as vertical as possible when assembling and moving.Slide the back of the brush up and down the wall. Yes the moderns are thinner but stiffer if you have composite they would bend too much at that height, the brush bristle angle needs to be adjustable to almost vertical, clean on the upstroke rinse on the down.Its the top sections that bend so use c/f except for the tip.

even thou its a total of 11m what actual length/height do you get as you cant use the end poles because they go to point

The Grandslam is cheaper than the cheshire fishing "gangster" its the same length and the same number of sections.Dont know how good it is because I need to feel the poles.But for the price it looks ok, the bit you adapt to take a brush is the 6th object from the left in the pic, the items on the left of it you dont need and you may get some discount. It should end up being a 28ft actual pole, so with say 4ft reach it will do 31-32ft-sorry its imperial :-\ The history of the poles is over on Matt (that was banned) DIY forum, you will have to google it as I would get banned if I posted a link to this classified info :o Post is called "Merry Christmas" as thats the time of year I gave all the info free to you all.

Do expander foam the sections ya can`t stack em`anymore.

Yep thanks Lewis, mate. Yep stackable so dont take up much space, on the 16m ones they stack in the 16m after you have taped them up to stop compression in use. If anyones going to the fed show theres a good chance that Brodex will be there with their take on the fishing poles, so a really good time to have a free feel ;)
