Title: national insurance number

been asked for my NI number from a job we did thats window cleaning on new build, anyone know why they want this, they have my utr number although they have said its wrong but checked with inland revenue and its right

For window cleaning within the building industry you have to be registered with the CIS (construction industry scheme) which is done via your NI number.

It means that basically you are classed as a sub contractor and the taxman will take 20% or 30% of your profit from the job and the deduction will be made by who ever is paying you.

You then offset that tax already paid when you do your tax return.

 thanks for that Rosskesava, i knew about UTR and CIS but didnt know they needed NI as well, cant remember any others asking for it, maybe they did - must be getting old ;D
