i never look at these things, let accountant do it all but my mate has been self employed for a while now and has to complete his form for the first time.
he is trying to do it himself as he doesnt earn much.
he showed me the form he was sent to fill in.
its only 4 pages (short tax return)
asked me to help out with it, im sure there is supposed to be more than just this very small 4 page short form.
so basically what forms does he need, im sure he needs more??

I do mine online but that sounds about right, it isn't complicated

doesnt he need the self employment form with it to??
told him do it online but he wants to get his head round it as its his first etc ...

Hi WC, yes I would have thought there would be more than four pages......... Im just trying to think of the letter or paper work that comes before or even with the form....He could do it online, he would need to register and by memory would get a "gateway" number to log on with.......

Nope, if his finances are simple, and he has no income from say a property he owns and rents (for example), the short tax return is all he needs to fill out.
It's very simple to do.
How much does your accountant charge you for doing it? ;D

all they want to know is your turnover less expenses, and a few other questions so that should be it, read the form and if doesn't ask that it is wrong, if it does well that is correct.

the short tax return is only 4 pages fill in your details on the first page, page 2 incomings and outgoings and then just check the other questions in case any affect you and thats it. i think it has to be sent of this month or you will have to do it online

Short tax form is ok if your turnover/trading profit is below a certain amount £10k I think. HMRC are trying to make it easy to complete. Do it on line, if you're due a refund they'll pay it promptly.
