I love qouteing against chem dry and Servicemaster because they all seem to have a very arrogant view to carpet cleaning. Nearly always get the jobs that they quote against me on. I am from north hampshire and they fell that they can charge what they like and they just trade on their name.

They dont even quote properly, just a quick look round the house and then a price on a business card. Always good to come in after them when you leave a consumer guide for the customer, Comment is Chem dry never do this.

They do use scare tacticks but the best come back is that they will use some young lad  on basic wage that does not really care about your carpets just about the money he is earning. We can all play at that game.

Don’t seem to compete with CD as much as I used too, think there focus is in the FF side of the business, hope Homeserve keep it that way and not take it in-house!

ServiceMaster very low key in my neck of the woods! One live in the next road to me NICE bloke with his yellow Ninja also dose not sing I’m for ever blowing bubbles! ;D

Ian

What question did they ask?

Lee are you going out to quote or doing them over the phone?, I know that it is hard to be everywhere when you are busy.

CD quote a variety of prices based on the individual franchisee, ones in my area charge from £95 one man band CD to multi truck £185, for the same cleaning, I bet customers can get pretty Peed of if they get the wrong CD!

Chem Dry franchisees can charge what they like for their carpet & upholstery cleaning. However bear in mind they have a high overhead starting position. License fees and chemical costs. Minimum chemical purchase is around 3k per license per annum. This is only for carpet cleaning chemicals and does not cover fire and flood work.
Interestingly they recommend spending 25% of turnover on marketing to grow your business and 10% to stand still.

Ian

I cleaned 2 x two seaters with 12 cushions the other day for £140.00. When I had finished the custy told me he had received 5 other quotes, not one of them under £300!! and the highest was £370!! this guy had also said that he would take the suite outside to clean it. When the custy asked him about rain ruining the suite he was told "That is not my problem mate, it is up to you to make sure you get it covered up"! >:( He then demanded a £125 deposit from the custys credit card !! The custy told him to Foxtrot Oscar ;D

Hi Able

seems very cheap for that amount of work and how long did it take. How much do you charge for a Cushion?

Cheers

The gist of it was that the franchise had totally changed in the 10 years we had it.

From mainly domestic/commercial carpet & upholstery cleaning to disaster restoration which I was not interested in doing, (especially with them taking 25% off the top!) I could have bought into Servicemaster or Rainbow in 1990 if I wanted DR.
I don't know if you saw the Disastermasters programme on BBC1 recently, after watching that I was 100% sure of my decision.

From a reasonable fee per month to a fee plus minimum goods spend plus enforced equipment purchase at a high cost (their machine came to about £8000 10 years ago and was not a patch on say a Ninja!)
From "the unfranchise" (a light touch, being left to run your business) to tighter and tighter contracts, continual interference and threats if you didn't agree.

I also came to realise that while the cleaning system was good, it wasn't that good and the customers where buying us not some system (I kept them when I went solo which tends to show that!)

I know change can be good but it was just getting ridiculous to me so I called it a day. Quite honestly it was the best thing I did, and just to add I'm not someone who couldn't make it as a franchisee we won Franchisee of the Year in 1993 or 1994 I think it was, I can't remember now!

I have put it behind me, the nightmares have stopped and I haven't wet the bed for ages now!  ;D

Hi Guys

Did you learn any thing in their marketing that you now use? And how much can you talk about your experances?

Did you know that if you pay for some info that when you have learnt it it becomes yours? and you can then use. For example that joe polish audits, I have paid for the info so I can chat to you about it and you can ask me questions. I cant charge money for it but i can talk about it.

What I am getting at is can I ask you about their marketing?

Ask away but what is there to know that:

1. Is not in the public domain already and,
2. Isn't being used by carpet cleaners both franchise and independent.

For instance, the Cleaning Doctor uses methods CD used 15 - 20 years ago!
