Title: Decking Oil
Post by: Alan McTernan on October 03, 2011, 07:11:44 pm
Hi all,

We oiled a deck last month and the client has just phoned me to say she doesn't like how dark it is!!! :-\

So am wondering if anyone knows how to lighten decking oil? ;)

Cheers
Alan

Asuming you used a natural oil, with no added colour then time will lighten it naturally.

The oil will have absorbed into the wood by now so I can't see that it's possible to lighten.

If absoultely essential then you could try sanding with a very fine sand paper but I wouldn't want to go there. He's been OK with it for a month, what was his reason for waiting so long to call?

Natural oil used! The reason they left it so long was because i told them it would lighten up.......whichit hasn't :(

I tell people that results will vary due to the oils bringing up the natural colours which again vary given the exposure to elements. Its there to stay - sorry - cheque cleared  ;D

Alan,

What wood is it, and what oil did you use.

Hi Roger,

Hope you are well?

Its soft wood (standard big shed decking) and i used colourtrend (dark oak) water based from Brett.

Alan,

Dark Oak on pine will stay dark, you'll have do a strip and brighten and start again.
Why did they want a pine deck dark? Some people.
I'm around on Sunday if you want to give me a call.

Hi Roger,

Sorry I didn't call on Sunday have been busy trying to deal with "bloody" staff issues!!!! Argh...

I am going to have another look at the deck soon and I will take some chemical with me to try.

Cheers
