Just taken receipt of my lance and gutter tool attachment - looks a great piece of solid kit for the price.
All connected and ready to test :P
Any tips on method ? Justin Ruggles can you hear me ?? Mick Hay are you taking notes ?? :D
Kind regards,
Sarah

lance and gutter tool atachment? how do you clean gutters from the floor ,platform, scaffolding or are you working from height ????????? :-X :-X :-X :-X if its from the floor how do you know youve cleaned them out properly and how do you get the debris out and past the downpie?
-
Looks similar to a wfp pole with a hook shaped attachment on top. You hook it over the gutter and blast away the contents with water fed from a pressure washer.
We have only tried it once on our own house but it worked a treat and goes up to a height of 7.3m
All this whilst your feet are firmly on the ground. Took hubby 5 mins to set up and he did two second floor gutters in 10 mins !!!
I'm hearing the sound of money rolling my way ;D ;D ;D
Will try to post some pics later but am being told the update file is full.
Sarah
Ps: You can feel any obstructions with the hook end as your going along the gutter. Also the force of the water pressure seems to break down the clumps and they easly fall down the downpipe where you collect it all. Iwatched this process on our first floor gutters from the bedroom window.
Of course you wont be able to move 2ft high bushes but wont take on any that difficult now seeing as we are able to fit in more per day now with the speed of this little monster.

1 bit of advice
i used mine for a OAP home, did ground floor, first floor and second floor
this is my bit of advice, watch out for those Downpipe wire nest things, its easy to catch them and they get dragged out, i did it with 2 on the 2nd floor bit, took ages waggling the pole to move them back into place
-
Thanks Matt,
Any tips/help humbly received. ;D
Will tell hubby to watch for those when he does his first job with the lance on Tuesday.
Regards,
Sarah
-
I'd have thought you would be dumping the crap onto the floor what with all the pressure an all,not down the down pipe
I mean there's no better way of knowing youve done the job than seeing it with your own eyes
-
Hello Sarah, what sort of power washer do you use for the gutter lance?
I have seen a gutter WFP made by Omnipole, I think - what is the advantage of a power washer?
Could you tell me what sort of vehicle you have to put all of your equipment in? Do you have any pictures?
Regards, Glen.
-
Hi Sarah
Sorry about the email problems, I have sent your reply to you now.
Can you forward me any pictures of your gutter system in use please?
Many Thanks
Andrew
-
Hi Chris
You would think so would'nt you. However as the hook is kept almost to the gutter floor and done at an angle towards the downpipe it just seems to flush it rather than blast it over the top. Thats not saying some water doesn't come over the top - it happens when there is a big blockage but the debris seems to stay in (so far).
Glen,
We have an on-board Honda Industrial pressure washer which we can take out and wheel around larger properties attached to the lance (yet to be done but thats the theory).
We also looked at the other brand but at almost 5 times the cost it was not an option for us at this moment in time. They also do a gutter Vac which sucks up the debris and stores it in a sack ready to dispose of but at over twice the cost of their gutter/powerpole set up its gonna be along time saving for that one (even though its my wish list piece of kit). No idea what the powerpole means - perhaps someone else can enlighten us.
We have an LDV convoy with a payload of 1850kg. Its a double rear axle LWB an easily carries all our kit and the bodies.
We do have a 1000ltr tank on board but its never more than half full as we are always no more than 10 minutes from home and a top-up.
Sorry cant load pics - tried earlier and the upload file was full.
Glen - it really is horses for courses when buying equipment but for us its a case of sourcing the best piece of kit for the money you can spend. If the cheque book allowed we would have an Omnivac sat in the garage right now. :P

Our last job today was a gutter clean, most of the gutter was full with leaf mould, sludge and moss, some places 3" thick, with well established plants growing out of the hoppers! If we were to use a pressure washer, well, you could imagine the the mess! We would rather do them by 'hand' anyday.

Jake,
You are right - attempting to do a gutter job on a case that bad with a lance would be just plain stupid.
As I 've said on previous posts - we will have to be selective on the jobs we do with the lance. Firstly for the reason you stated and secondly any with fitted wire mesh traps at the top of the downpipe cannot be done at all.
Having said that we have just cleaned our whole house gutters and there was stacks of embedded moss and small bushes - it moved it all. Ironically we checked using the ladders and will continue to do so until we are sure we have done it properly.
Have just lined up 3 jobs to do in the morning and even with inexperience, set up and travel will do them in about 2 hours (max). £150 which would have taken us double the time with ladders and the old tools.
With that sort of hourly rate we have calculated we dont need to do the real dirty jobs.
Sounds a bit like im lance bashing - I dont mean to. Its just like when we first went wfp. Nice not to have to worry about the hubby up a ladder in this kind of weather and all the sceptics knocking it before they have tried it.
In the future I am sure you wont see many w/c cleaning guttering up a ladder - safety and speed will prevail.
I will let you all know how we get on and I will be honest about its performance - so its a case of 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating'.
Thanks for your comments though Jake,

Any more info on the performance of your Power Lance Sarah?
as Northern tools had a free delivery day I've just orderd one along with the gutter tool and nozzels plus a petrol power washer (not told the missus yet)plan to make it pay for its-self before she ask's?
I thought with all this wet and cold weather comming I should have a back up plan for those horrible wet days.
plus I could add shop signage and cladding to my services.

I know i have alluded to this already but would it not be better to just get a gutter cleaning attachment for a WFP rather than a power washer and gutter cleaning lance?
-
had 1 along time your best of with a power washer with a vario psi
system so you can alter what psi your using.
short of nothing ive got ;D
gaza
-
would it not be better to just get a gutter cleaning attachment for a WFP
I don't think there is one for a WFP.
Omnipole sell a gutter cleaning attachment and trigger to convert there poles but as i understand it you still need a pressure washer.
Would be good though if you could remove your brush head and slip a gutter attachment on would make some jobs a lot easier as you would not need to cart around extra equipment.
Paul
-
Hiya Guys,
Pauls correct - the Omni powerpole system is no doubt a good one, but soooooo expensive at almost 4 times the cost of the NT one. In principle its the same thing. A pole with a hook attached to a pressure washer. I was told you needed the pressure to break down the debris so would not work on a pump alone.
If you have a powerpole already then it is easy to buy the hook and use the same pole - saving costs and extra equipment. I was told by Onmi that their gutter hook attachment did not fit any other brand of pole (I have a Brodex Fibreglass) so hence my NT purchase.
I suppose if you had the complete Omni set up in the van and a big enough tank you could do it wfp but the quality of water makes no difference to the clening job so most connect to the outside tap because of the pure water costs.
Alan,
The initial 4 cleans have been good, thanks. Hubby is getting better with his technique which we did completely wrong when testing it on our house. he got soaked and so did the surrounding area !!!!!
Its quick to set up (minites) and so much quicker to do the job itself, although we have yet to do a really bad, mucky job. Just quoted for 472ft Nursing Home job with bushes and hills growing in it and cannot attempt to send this through the downipe so if we get the job will have to take the end caps off anb blast over the sides and clean up after. Would normally have taken a day but think we can do it in half.
Chapter 2 (sorry its like a novel).
had some great tips on w/c sites and one was by either Matt or Gaza, who mentioned these wire mesh covers at the top of te downpipe. You can check their prescence by using the tip of the hook and either take them out or leave the job. The second is to keep the nozzle on the gutter bed and angle it at 40 deg. this ensures you feel the debris, it breaks it down and the water is mainly kept in the gutter and not all over you :P
For £100 its a great piece of kit and seems to do the job well, although ironically we are still checking after by ladders until we are confident in our technique.
Only time will tell but a dam good investment I'd say. If you need any help setting up or whenyou first try it email me.
Kind regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah, the main purpose for me buying the power pole was to do facia ect cleans do you think it'll do that with ease???
Also conservatory roofs as the water seems as if you can aim it so that it points down and won't get under the fennels at the top??
Alan
-
Hi Alan,
The Northern Tool lance you ordered will do the gutters/fascias and soffits with ease.
Personally I would not use any type of pressure on con roofs but would do it with wfp set up.
Maybe others would like to comment on that one though.
Regards,
Sarah
-
Hi all
Regarding the use of pressure washer on con roof's, I purchased a Lavor petol pressure washer new from ebay. This quite low power and has proved to be very good on seveal con roof's and a large greenhouse.
The trick seems to not to hold the lance too close! I wash the roof and guttering etc then rince down with WFP, then wash the rest as normal with WFP. So far I have no problems with leaking but common sence must be used,
I also intend to purchase the Northern tool pole and attachment
Steve
-
common sence must be used,
Agreed..
My thinking with con roofs is I would never use a power washer on them normaly as the water would go up the roof and under the fennel which in a lot of con roof are not sealed. But with a power washer I hope that you can direct the water to hit the roof from above thus aliminating the chances of the water going under the fennel plus I'm hoping as long as the fennels are secure these should be easier to clean because with a WFP they are a bugger (all them fiddly bits)
Any way my order has been confirmed and I'll be putting my thoughts into practice by the weekend ( I have a couple of really grimy jobs in mind that I'll practice on take pictures and hopefully use to advertise new service)..
I LOVE THIS FORUM IT'S LIKE ONE BIG THINK TANK.
(not water tank)

We've been cleaning Gutters / facias and soffits for the last 18 mths with an extendable fibreglass / aluminium lance from Dual pumps, with a hook attachment. An average 3 bed house takes us an hour, and we charge £80, we clean the insides and out, sometimes getting plastered! but save loads of time. When you do one house it normally leads onto the rest of the neighbours! ;D add on a window clean as an extra if you need to clinch the order! The Honda petrol pressure washer has paid for itself over and over, a good investment.
With regards to pressure washing a conservatory roof- i would advise against it, if it's that dirty charge extra and take more time with pure water and a brush!
Regards,
Craig
-
Craig,
Do you have any photos? Which model pressure washer have you got and how much did it cost? Do you have to use detergent to dissolve green algae on the facia/soffit?
Regards, Glen.

I have only ever cleaned gutters by ladders, hands and eyes but am V impressed with all of the comments made. What a helpful bunch of people!
John.
-
Its arrived today put it together now all I need is some time and dirty UPVC so that I can play with my new gizzmo..
The other half has'nt said anything yet but she's been hinting at how much it cost..
Luckly a flyer from macro came throught the post and they are promoting a petrol power washer for around £49.99 so I'll just let her spot it on the table (should keep the situation calm)
-
Alan,
Let us know how you get on with it and what your thoughts are.
It seems I've been lance bashing for a few weeks now and it would be nice to hear another view.
Good luck with the practicing and dont forget angle at 40% or your'll get soaked even without the rain !!

Some one of this forum e-mailed me this earlier this year and don't the glove fit.
Dear Tech Support:
Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0.
I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing
that took up a lot of space and valuable resources. In addition, Wife
1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all
other system activity:
applications such as Poker Night 10.3,
Football 5.0,
Hunting and Fishing 7.5, and Racing 3.6.
I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to
run my favourite applications. I'm thinking about going back to
Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0. Please
help!
Thanks,
A Troubled User.
REPLY:
Dear Troubled User:
This is a very common problem that men complain about. Many people
upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a
Utilities and Entertainment program.
Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM
and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!! It is also
impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0. It is
impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system
once installed.
You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed to
not allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under
Warnings-Alimony-Child Support. I recommend that you keep Wife1.0 and
work on improving the situation. I suggest installing the background
application "Yes Dear" to alleviate software augmentation. The best
course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE because ultimately
you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system will
return to normal anyway. Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to
be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes with several support
programs, such as Clean and Sweep 3.0, Cook It 1.5 and Do Bills 4.2.
However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will
cause the system to launch the program Nag Nag 9.5. Once this happens,
the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase
additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0
WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary with
Short Skirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and
will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.
Best of luck,
Tech Support

fortunatle the last time the other half came to work with me I was cleaning the traditional way, then she fell of the steps and broke her arm and she refused to come again so she has no real idea of the kind of income a WFP generates..

We havn't ordered a gutter lance but yesterday our 7.3m jet spray lance arrived from Northern Tools which we ordered for a huge jet spraying job which will take the best part of a day. If it's any good then we'll get the gutter lance as well as it at that time of year for doing gutters.
When we unpacked it we thought it had one section missing but then we realised it was pushed down inside the main pole in spite of the instructions saying it was packed separately.
One thing which was annoying is that it didn't come with the nozzle. The instructions says it's a standard snap on type which no one in any place we've been in has heard of. We're doing the job on Sunday so I'm getting a bit concerned.
I also was a bit shocked at how heavy it is so I'll either have arms like Arnie or they'll be down by my feet.
I'll let you know how we get on but as a precaution - I'm not booking much work for Monday. ;D
-
One thing which was annoying is that it didn't come with the nozzle.
I orderd the pack of 5 with the 4.5 Orifice Plus a set of two came with the power washer..
Still not tried it yet, I have all this new kit and I just can't find the time to get my hands on it...
-
Hi thewindowcleaner1
I orderd the pack of 5 with the 4.5 Orifice Plus a set of two came with the power washer..
Were they the snap on type?
The end of the the jet spray lance we have is odd. It is brass and has about 6 or 8 very small ball bearings in it that can be seen when you pull back the sleeve or collar. It's about half inch diameter.
The hose that comes with it that goes up the inside of the poles like wfp is rated up to 3 500 odd psi. Seems a bit over the top for just a jet spray.
I'm just hoping we have not bought something that is something other than what we thought it was.
Still not tried it yet, I have all this new kit and I just can't find the time to get my hands on it...
What you really mean is you have not yet 'played' with it. ;D

Ive done about 10 jobs with the same 7.3m jet spray from Northern Tools and find it hard to cotrol above 5m but apart from that its a great bit of kit.
I hope you have strong arms coz your going to need them but Northern Tools do have a back belt for this jet spray Item No. 221555E but its out of stock.
-
For anyone wanting to look at the items needed for the lance set up I have listed below the part numbers you need. Hope this info helps. All items were ordered via their website :-
www.northerntooluk.com
We purchased :-
7.3m lance £69.99 part no. 22812E-146
Gutter attachment £ 9.99 part no. 1573211E-146
Back Belt 16.99 part No. 22155E-146
You will also need a washer nozzle and pressure washer hose (£30.99 and £43.99 from NT). We bought ours from our local www.pirtek.co.uk for £2.50 and £20 resectively.

Ross,
Sems like you ordered the same lance. All you need now is the guter hook attachment and the nozzles and your away. The pole is a bit heavier as the throw-back on the water pressure is strong.
Kind rgards,
Sarah

What a massive price differential! Would the rest of the kit be cheaper also?

Craig,
Do you have any photos? Which model pressure washer have you got and how much did it cost? Do you have to use detergent to dissolve green algae on the facia/soffit?
Regards, Glen.
What's your email address and i'll send u pics! Its a Honda 6.5 hp engine (150 bar/ 14LPM) with dual pumps-pump. There is a chemical inlet if you use chemicals, we see no use for detergents, the pressure is enough. Cost ? can't find receipts at moment but if i remember rightly it was about £700 for the engine/pump, + extra for the lance about £100 and some high pressure pipe. For more info look on Dual Pumps website.
Sorry took me a while to get back, i was out doing gutters!!! ::)
Regards,
Craig
-
Hi Glen,
I agree, think we caught the guy on a quiet sunday morning and he actually fitted the nozzle for us as well !!
We purchased one single fixed nozzle but the NT ones come in a pack of 5 and are interchangeable for different widths of spray. the hose NT sell comes complete with the matching ends to the lance and is for use up to a 4000psi machine, but if you can DIY and have a helpfull chappie at your local PIRTEK then they may fir them on for you too !!
I did look around for weeks prior to ordering from NT and couldn't find the lance or gutter hook any cheaper but if you do lease post it here as I know a lot of people are looking to buy the system in the next few weeks.
There must be a way of making the system yourself even cheaper and think Matt mentioned he would be including a way on his site when he updates it sometime soon.
Regards,
Sarah

Norther Tools also do a pressure washer hose for use on up to 2000 psi at £16.99.

Well I found some time at last to have a try (play)of my new bits, started the power washer, felt really chuffed I started it first time, so I decided to try the diff nozzels first so I cleaned the van the patio decking the block paving path and the garden walls, got used to the kick back (compared to my £39 argos special that I already had)
Now time to try the pole......went to conect the power hose to the pole ....both ends male fitting.... rang Northern tools apparently I need an adapter £2.30 inc vat but won't get it until Tue / wed next week..
so saturdays task is to try and source one locally so that I can play practice...
-
Hi thewindowcleaner1
We had exactly the same problem. Our lance arrived Monday and we're doing a job this coming Sunday (great day to work but it's the only day it can be done but it is at a very very good price).
After going around all the diy stores and shops I went through the Thompson for companies that deal in anything hydraulic or pnuematic and found somewhere that sold all the nozzles etc.
All they did was remove the screw on nozzle that was on it as it was NOT a standard fitting, and screw on a new one. Hey presto - all sorted for about a fiver.
So .... off we went with our new lance today and did two outstanding gutter and facia jobs as the weather was too bad for w/c'ing.
We had a good play with it time finding out the best way to use it.
Cheers

Hi all, new to this site. I have a wfp system from Outreach and that came with a gutter cleaning attachment tool and 5 spray nozzles.
Works a treat and clears gutters great up to 45ft

Hi all, I am new to this site and find all your comments welcoming.
Been window cleaning in harrogate for 3 years.
I have a wfp system from outreach(bolton) that came with a gutter attachment and 5 spraying nozzles for differential pressure.
Easy to use and clears gutters well(in the beginning you do tend to check to ensure a good job is done)
Thanks all.
P.S What sort of prices do you all charge for cleaning gutters(say a three bedroomed semi)
Sorry for being cheeky been asked to do 123 houses on a large site and have not got a clue how to price it
Thanks

Do have any further tips / good or bad experiences to share?

No problems Steve,
IMO this is a really great piece of kit if for no other reason than it enables Hubby to do work in the rain.
Since we purchased it he has probably done 9 or 10 full days work on guttering on rainy days. He manages to do about 5 houses in a day before his back tells him to stop. !! These poles are not as light as his Brodex fibreglass and even though they are about the same height it is heavier and harder to control because of the sheer power of the water blasting from the nozzle.
The belt is a must if using it for any length of time but the money is good £25 per side is an average).
Given the sad accident and death of another w/c I think more people should get these, if only for the safety aspect.
PS; I know I have said it before but you do get wet so we invested in a waterproof boiler suit and wellies.
Also we always build in a full w/c at their usual price. The water does run over the gutter onto their windows which will defo need a clean - extra money there too.
Hope that helps,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
I'm stlii useing my ladders until i go wfp in the next few months, but i notice you said that hubby is still checking with his ladders?
This is what i am going to do because i think when i go wfp the ladders are going. if you look on ebay for a very nominal cost you can buy a very small camera, that you could clip to the top of your pole, this will transmit a picture to a small handheld tv, no more ladders and you could even show your customers (if you wished) the final result. the above camera is operated on a 2 x 9v batterys. I hope this has been a little help to you? what a real bummer if he falls of the ladder after goin wfp. Good luck to you both

Hi Jeff,
Since that post in October he is now confident enough in his technique not to have to check but I agree it woulod be a good tool to have as proof to the customer. Will check on ebay later. Thanks. ;)
Our wish list piece of kit would be the Omnivac which I understand will include a monitor as you have stated. From what I remember last Sept it was over £1200 and unfortunately there is always something else I would like to have instead. (Onmivac or Holiday, Onmivac or new suite, Omnivac or facelift !!!... the list goes on.) ::)

You have probably read this in one of my previous posts but dont forget to angle the lance at about 40 deg towards the downpipe as you are pulling it towards you. Keep it as near to the floor of the gutter as possible - that way you will minimise the water and debris spilling over the top.
Finally, before you start make sure there are no mesh covers at the top of the downpipe or you'll be just moving the problem and not clearing it.
Have fun with the new toy Steve and if I can be of any further help just ask,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
Sorry, I've just thought of a further question.
Do you use the lance to clean the external part of the gutter?
At the moment I use the WFP to clean the external part of uPVC gutters and also to clean uPVC soffit and fascia boards.
Thanks.

I have thought before that a small 12V TV camera (which start from about £60) mounted on a pole would be ideal for inspecting guttering without having to use a ladder.
Used in conjunction with a gutter lance it would enable the operator to see what was up there before starting and afterwards to check his work. Perhaps one of our boffins would be interested in taking up the challenge.

yes a camrea would be the idea. have spoken to alot of poeple about these but no ideas yet.

Steve,
If we are cleaning the insides of the gutters and are asked to wash the outside we simply click off the hook attachments and blast the outsides. Make sure you hold the end of the lance quite a distance away as they are powerful enough to shatter brittle Upvc gutters and cladding.
If its only an outside gutter clean then we use our wfp system as we keep an old Vikan Brush head for this job to avoid contamination with the water for w/c.
Enjoy the rest of the BH tinkering Steve. ;D

Thanks, I was begining to sound like I was lance bashing on my own again :P
For the outlay its an invaluable piece of kit and as for the safety factor - well that speaks for itself ;D

hi Sarah, one quick question . Does the client not need or want the outside of the guttering cleaned. Most of the people I,ve had so far were more interested in the outside of the guttering been cleaned.
-
Ray,
We do both as two seperate services. Our biggest earner is cleaning the ' inside ' of the guttering. Getting out the moss, plant growths, broken tiles/concrete etc.
Cleaning the Upvc undersides/fascias/sofits etc are a different service but often combined when cleaning the inside AT AN EXTRA COST. ;D
As I said previously if the customer wants the outsides done we do it with our wfp as you dont really need the power of the pressure washer which runs the lance.
Lots of potential as is seasonal patio/wall and driveway blasts !!!!!

Sarah had a look at the omnipole gutter setup= is this not just an industrial wet and dry, and could you not just buy the gutter attachment from omnipole and use your present pole
as for camera at one of the motorbike outing one of the lads had a small camera on the front of the bike, it was really small and a cable going to his video camera in the back of his bike.I dont think he paid much for it about £30
try maplins and ask the bike shops hope this helps
