Had a youngish sounding fella phone me today.
Said it was a business call.He said that on a `google`
Search I was 19th, or something. That’s how he found me.
He was offering some sort of deal that would get me
On the first page I think he said.
I said I was`nt interested.Thinking about,I am a little
( well in fact a lot) short of work and could do with a
Bit of a boost.
How do I go about getting myself noticed a bit more via
My web site and what would be the approximate cost be?
Is it worth doing anything like this.
I did`nt get around to asking him any details like that, price
Etc.
Thanks for replies.

I do the SEO myself for our website and we feature on the first page for most of our targeted phrases. I know its a different market but the principles are the same. Let me know your URL and I shall have a look over it for you.

Had the same call yesterday.
I asked him what search term he used to find us at the bottom of page 2. He said some long winded phrase that we don't target.
I told him to try 'window cleaner london'.
After the silence he said it must have cost a fortune to get there. My reply 'nope, thank you for the call, goodbye'
I can pass our seo company details to you if you want. (not if you're in London though) :)

I do the SEO for my site too.
There's no need to pay someone to do it for you. If a company is trying to sell you this service you want to see how good they are; so put something like 'SEO' into google and see where they rank on the results page. If they're nowhere to he seen then they're not doing a very good job.
-
Lewis, a lot depends on where you are and how competitive the market is for your search terms.
If you amongst just a handful of window cleaners targeting your area, then ranking well can be done with little effort.
Like Mark said, post your www address. There are a number of people on here that can give you some simple pointers about how your site is put together.

In the HTML pages of your site homepage find the following code, near the top of the page and fill in the keywords/description between the speech marks. keywords = what you think people will put in to a search engine when looking for a service like yours. I would go with window cleaning west riding, window cleaning, window cleaner etc. Seperate each keyword or phrase with a comma and a space
i.e window, cleaning, window cleaning,
Like this
<meta name="keywords" content="FILL IN YOUR KEYWORDS HERE" />
<meta name="description" content="FILL IN A DESCRIPTION OF YOUR SITE AND INCLUDE A COUPLE OF KEYWORDS" />
The text within your homepage should mention 'window cleaners [area]) a couple of times. (no more than 10% of the total text on the page)
Where you have got 'Gleem Clean' at the top on the picture, that is a Heading tag. Change that to 'window cleaners [area]' and put Gleem clean somewhere else.
Get yourself a map listing on Google Places.
There are a lot of free tools here http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/
-
Also, your title tag should have window cleaners west riding in it.
You will find this in the HTML page above the keyword & description
FROM <title>Gleem Clean</title>
TO <title>window cleaners west riding | Gleem Clean</title>

Not the settings, but the HTML code.

Thanks for the email. Sorry its taken me a few days to get round to coming back to you. Can you let me know what phrases you are looking to be found by. Eg “window cleaning Liversedge “ I assume will be one. Are there any more?
Your site only appears to be 2 pages deep. Is that correct? If you can imagine that there are hundreds of thousands of sites on the internet with the words “window cleaning” in them, the chance of Google placing your 2 pages near the top is remote. What you need is a much bigger site (in terms of numbers of pages) with each page specific to a certain phrase.
So for example you could have a page titled “Window Cleaning Heckmondwicke”. The page would be something like www.gleemclean.co.uk/window-cleaning-heckmondwicke/ . You would create a new folder called window-cleaning-heckmondwicke in your root directory and have an index.html page in that folder.
You would have the <title> tag as Window Cleaning Heckmondwicke. You would also have a H1 tag containing the same title aswell. The <description> tag would be something like – “Window Cleaning Heckmondwicke, quotes for window cleaning in Heckmondwicke. Contact your local window cleaner in Heckmondwicke.”
Your <keywords> tag would then just be “window cleaning heckmondwicke” - very specific
Then, your content will also need to contain these words. You will see that I am creating a page here that Google sees as being relevant to someone searching for a window cleaning in Heckmondwicke. The more repeats of the phrase in the right place without going over the top, the better.
You would do the same for “Window Cleaner Heckmondwicke” and “Window Cleaners Heckmondwicke”
As you can see that’s 3 new pages just for one type of work and one town. If you choose the area you will travel to and pick out all the towns and villages in that area and do the same you will quickly have a 30-50 page site with a lot more chance of one of those pages being found. All the pages will be identical, just with different titles, headers etc.
You will also need to create an XML sitemap so that Google can find the pages.
I could go on forever. I don’t want to sound like a know it all but I have been designing websites and doing my own SEO for the past 10 years and can offer some help. What I will do for those who want it is knock up brief instruction document laying out all the tips I have picked up over the years. Believe me it is better to do it yourself than pay a company to do it as you can just change it as you go and try different things. I will re-post once I have done it and anyone who wants it can have a copy.
