To all the newbees , hope you got savings:-) or warm clothes;-)
As we head towards winter, I expect to see the first signs of some moderate to heavy snowfalls as early as October or November in certain parts of the UK. In terms of the meteorological winter, I expect December, January, and February to experience below average temperatures, with the heaviest snowfalls occurring within the time frame of November to January across many parts of the UK.
The most important factor within our weather forecasting calculations is solar activity and other major natural factors that it influences. Radiant energy from the sun is the primary influence on both the earth's ocean and atmosphere.
Low solar activity and ocean behaviour alter atmospheric circulation and block jet stream patterns that create enhanced moisture in terms of snowfall. The UK and Ireland is hit by prolonged periods of extreme cold and snow from the Arctic regions, as cold easterlies or north-easterlies develop. Huge swirly low pressure systems also offer the potential for widespread disruption from heavy snowfall across many parts of the UK including the South, as they clash with the predominant cold air over the UK.
Coupled with other in depth factors such as recent volcanic activity and changes to the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic drift that we consider, this does not bode well for the severity of the UK and Northern European winter of 2011-12. Frequent and prolonged cold spells with heavy dumps of snow from blizzard like conditions is likely across many parts of the UK. The areas we expect to be worse hit throughout include the vast majority of Scotland and the Scottish Highlands, Northern England, and Northern Ireland. We have particular concerns as to the huge implications that this may pose to the infrastructure of the UK and Ireland transportation systems/economy.

Be intresting to see if your right tom.
If it is that bad will that make the government do something if we have 3 bad winters on the trot?
I think there be snow this year, but how bad, i've in waltham abbey essex for 9 years and every year it has snowed.
But the last two winters have been pretty bad; i actually think the last winter wasn't as bad as the one prior; as the snowfall was just before xmas; then the day everyone went back to work in jan :'(
And the snow hung around in jan 2010.
nov 2010 it snowed early :'( and then 2 weeks before xmas if i remember.
Nov 2010 Jan and feb 2011 were good month's earnings wise i just suffered in december due to snow and then time off due to holiday season.
Nothing we can do about it.
I can't see how you can predict the weather that far ahead; i've been looking at the positive weather solutions website where they took all the glory for predictions winter 2010-11.
the predictions for nov and dec this year; they have recently change (to milder).
I think a lot of people jump up and wave their hands when their right in the weather forecasting biz;
is this because they are rarely correct ;D

I used to love the snow, until I became self employed and heating costs went crazy.

I must admit I am not looking forward to it all over again.

I predict a perfectly manageable winter weathewise, nothing exceptional or worrisome to have to deal with.
Just like the other 95% of winters have been in the last 50 years.
-
I think that we are going to have a bad winter this year.
I cannot remember where I was working - somewhere southern and I noticed that the Canada Geese were flying early, this was mid August. They don't normally fly till September!!
Felt this had something to do with the weather changing for the worse but then again I could just be being an arse!!!!! ???

best thing to do is dont worry about what might happen!!
heat the van, bring some things inside(pumps, reel, pole).
get out working even if its only 3-4 hours during bad weather.
keep an emergency fund ready to dip into if you have to.
if the weather is really that bad enjoy the time off and dont worry about getting round late to your customers.most wont care!!!
