Title: ro membranes
Post by: windiewasher on August 28, 2011, 09:58:10 pm
How do you know when they need changing?
My ppm is becoming very erratic so I presume the membranes need changing as I've changed filters.also how much are membanes 2 x 200 gpd.

I don't really know to be honest.  All I can say is that I bought my RO unit from Pure Freedom and they advised me to change them every few years which I assume means every 3 years.  I have just gone past the 3 year point this month but it seems fine so I'm not going to bother changing them just yet.  I do always replace the vertical filters every 6 months though.

a little more info would help,
like, what make is the ro,
how old are the membranes,
has it always produced a high tds.
but 45 out of a ro is very high, sounds like they are knackered to me.

yes they are finished m8.
new ones are around 200/230 each
but dont buy the cheap ones that you see for 180/190 as they are not the same quality.

It's from vyair cost me 240 for the complete ro so not paying that much for membranes answer to next question too.

That's for a 40-40 membrane.  A 200gpd should be around £30- £40

I had this happen on my Vyair RO about a month ago.
It turned out that I had restricted the waste output flow by mistake and the waste pipe had a kink in it.
Might be worth checking.

hod did you restrict the waste output because im thinking something simillar as it is flying out the ro compared to it used to.

I replaced the waste pipe on my mine ages ago. It is the same John Guest type plastic pipe but I needed a longer length than was on there because I wanted it to reach the drain outside the garge.
Anyway to cut a long story short about a month ago I had the same thing happen as what you have described, the TDS was rising up to about 50-65ppm before DI and the RO was producing a lot more water than usual.
I thought the membranes were knackered.
It turned out the waste pipe was kinked outside before entering the drain and was restricting the waste water outlet.
I only found this out because it ended up blowing the waste pipe off of the RO!
I don't know if you have got the same thing happening but just check your waste pipe to make sure and check the connection is tight on the RO.

ive noticed it is slightly dripping from where the waste pipe comes off the ro!

Here's one to consider

http://www.gapswater.co.uk/acatalog/RO_UltraTec_HF5_SERIES_-_Ultra_Low_Pressure_Membranes.html

or this one

http://www.gapswater.co.uk/acatalog/RO_UltraTec_HF4_SERIES_-_Extra_Low_Pressure_Membranes.html

1st one same spec is £290 on purefreedom

2nd one same spec is £209 on pure freedom

Or are these the low quality ones someone mentioned in an earlier post.

Might be worth asking pure freedom to price match

I know pure freedoms are good as I had my system fitted there 2 and a half years ago but ro is churning out 40ish now, raising resin costs.

Get molgrips and a spanner on the RO waste pipe connector Doctor Windows and tighten it up as much as you can (without stripping the thread).
Since I did mine it has been as good as gold.
