I would say to worry more about doing it well, than doing it quick. Remember that from the first job you do, you are building your reputation. Until you're flat out with jobs there's not much point in worrying how long a job will take.

Craig,
start farthest away from the door and work out, that way you should not walk over anything you have cleaned.

Just be thorough, but not to the point of being anal, polite and never never never refuse a cup of tea.

Pre vac all then pre spray/spot all, get vac hoses out all then extract from furthest piont. By this time the coffe that should have been made will be just right temp to drink. And don't forget to leave some business cards.

I feel a bit ignorant at times refusing a tea/coffee but i dont drink it never have.

It gets a bit like father ted some days
"will you have a cup of tea"
"no thank you im fine"
"ah gooo onnn"
"honestly im fine"
"ah go on, go on, go on, will you have a cup of tea" etc etc

craig ,
fogive me for been a little curious, but from the jist of your question you sound as though you are just setting out on your c/c journey!!!
Your web site i might say tells a different story, and i dont see any thing wrong with that by the way, none of us want to give the impression we are inexperienced, but what i was wondering is your business some part of a local franchise? the site gives me that feeling :-\

You should always practice on friends and family's homes before you set out into the big wide world. It gives you an air of confidence when you arrive for your first live performance.

Similar in many ways to when you lose your virginity I suppose, especially where I'm from.... ;D

Similarly to Geoff.............

You have a very " professional " web site which gives the impression you've been around a while and have the experience and knowledge to safely undertake work but your post on here suggests the opposite.

I know this sounds like an odd question, but what are you using to prespray - a pump up, or a hydroforce?

You have invested in a truckmount so you must be confident

There was a string of posts recently about what order to do things  I think it was called how long

Hope I am able to get back to work next week

Hi everyone,

Further to the points highlighted about our website and us coming across as being professional but being newbies - we have been doing family / friends carpets with a porty for a while since deciding on persuing this trade earlier in the year. We have attended a Prochem course, read lots, practiced on old bits of carpet we have collected etc in fact we are confident in what we are doing.

The point of the question was this is going to be our first 'proper' job so yep, despite the above its a bit nerve racking - not because we dont know what to do but as we are still a bit slow and just want to be efficient and professional without cutting corners or making a complete faff about the whole thing. Hence asking you guys for any helpful hints on how to get through our first job.

This business is really important to us which is why I spent a long time doing the website, leaflets and having a go with friends carpets as we are far from cowboys and dont want to ruin anyones belongings. We have told everyone that we have done quotes for and booked in that we have only just started up and everyone has been happy with this.

Craig told me not to take what some of you said so seriously - but I couldnt help it!  ;D

Ian - read that one a while ago, will do a search and re-read it, thanks.

Why dont you clean your own or some of your own carpets first if its your first truckmount job maybe.

Its always a daunting doing your first paid job and you will prob fine like myself it took me 2 or 3 times longer to do my first job than it does now.

pre-spray, agitate, extract, groom, same as any carpet cleaning!!

I try to get the floor as clear as possible before starting.  I always pre-condition customers to clear the carpets as much as possible before I arrive.  Got them pretty  well trained by now ;)

It's worth investing a little time clearing the decks at the start of the job to avoid having to faff about once the machine is spitting money out of its exhaust pipe.

A decent time-saver: Leave sofas etc where they stand whilst pre-spraying/agitating, only move them just before firing up the machine, extract underneath then shove them back and extract the rest of the room.  As long as the carpet is 'clean' under sofas etc you don't need to pre-spray it.

You bought that trailer-mounted Maxx didn't you?  How did it look when you got the inch of dust off it?!!
