Title: best way to clean one of these.
Post by: derek west on August 14, 2011, 11:33:45 am
did a job for a lady and then she showed me this, smells of dog, (not we, just sweaty dog)

trying to work out the best way to clean, because of the long errr errr twiddly bits, i'm thinking wanding would be a problem, thought about submerging in a paddling pool with clensan, good shake while in theres then hang over poll and try to extract with the end of extraction hose.

oh....its acrylic but looks like a wool base (allthough not sure) and the backing is very very heavy duty. also worried about off gassing (think thats the phrase were using for it) a chemical reaction with the glue that causes a cat pee like smell. can i test for this in anyway. maybe just dip a corner and dry then give it a whiff.

any hoo. your thoughts gentlemen please, if you have any. oh and lasses.

just says acrylic on the label paul, worried about the off gassing with the submerge method, might just dip a corner in first and dry it, then give it a good whiff.

I'd of walked on that one. More trouble than they are worth IMO.

Need to watch you dont scrub to hard on those "locks", weather it be a brush, envirodri or a wand!

looks like its 8ft x 4ft so will have cost about £80-£90 tell her to chuck it out and buy another one! it will cost her £60 to clean

'off gassing' whats that when it at home? this rug is too much trouble, you can't agitate it as the strands will unravel...... so it needs a good soaking & dwell time to eradicate the smell ( unless you are willing to just mask the smell) this will need a a prolonged dry time

its not a job to be done in the customers home so will require taking away.

its too much hassle to do right ..... pass on it

Have just done two of these, smaller type about 6x4 each,

They had same problem, dog smell,

submerse cleaned,  extracted and turbo dryed.

They take forever to dry and the results are limited,

With mine the smell was gone but to actually clean right to the bottom of the pile is really difficult and some bits still remained even after submersion.

Only worth tackling if you have the space to do it right and drying space.

Regards
Steve

Its these type of Acrylic rugs that people have had the bother with the Latex adhesive breaking down and stinking.

I would personally recommend you prespray with a gallon of unleaded, and follow up with a lit swan vesta. It's a monstrosity.

I think as pro cleaners there comes a point when we have to say that this rug was just not designed to be cleaned certainly not an intensive clean.  As Mike said drive on to the next one.

If it is 8 ft x 4 ft and as heavy duty as you said, you'll need 4 sixteen stone gorillas to lift that out a paddling pool once it's submerged.
If it's that important to the customer it's option 1 which is the signed disclaimer with the full explanation of what could happen, or option 2 tell them to cook it in the sun for several weeks, regular vacuums at the same time with just the tube part, and keep spraying with something to kill the odours.

Me: too much hassle and risk for too little return.
