I'm looking to get a van at the end of the month I should have about £2500 maybe a bit more and I was thinking of getting a citroen dispatch or a ford transit connect but I'm not sure what to go for. What would use say was the better van? eg what it's like to drive, fuel consumption and just in general really. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
-
i was talking to a vehicle recovery guy and he said fords are very rarely recovered and the engines are great. :)
-
I cant comment on the connect but the expert/scudo/dispatch are excellent little vans especially the 2.0hdi models ;)
-
Ive got the hdi dispatch, drives like a car, even with 500lts of water in the back.

mate what you want without any doubt whatsoever is a fiat scudo, try and get the non turbo 1.9d model, as this has the old style pump etc and will not cost you much to run i swear they do about 50mpg the only thing is they are slow, but the room in the cab is massive and the back is extensive whilst all the time not being to high for you to pick off ladders on the top, you will get a 52 plate with about 80-000 miles on it for about 1500, you will love it! unless you have to make a long journey at 70mph lol

I have the pug with HDI engine in, the engine is fantastic, it pulls half a ton of water like it didnt exsist, great vans great engines.
Please dont buy the straight diesel engine, slow and sluggish!

I think SteveCM on here is soon selling one of his, an Astra van. May be worth looking him up on here.

toyota hiace. Never a costly mot, never break down, never rust, plenty of space and will cover 600,000 miles without fault. thier is no other workhorse in the world like it.

There is an "X" reg' toyota near me & you'd be forgiven for thinking it was new!! Not a speck of rust on the bodywork!

had 3 vans for window cleaning
doblo great van just a bit small
dispatch ok van but ugly and dated and not quite big enough.
have a 05 ducatto, paid £1800 great van drives lovely massive in the back.looks nice too!

Thanks for all the reply's they have helped a bit lol but am still torn between them. I do like the look of the connect the best, its cheapest for me to insure and it does get mostly good reviews online but the extra seat and more space in the back in the expert/scudo/dispatch is appealing (my girlfriends not passed he test yet and shes got a little boy). On most the websites i have looked at say they have about the same mpg mid 30s to the mid 40s so i think im just going to have to flip a coin lol.
-
my next van either transporter or toyota possibly.
-
Johnny I have the expert/dispatch type van if you want a look at it some night.
Also don't buy one local they are all about £500 dearer than going to Glasgow or Edinburgh, unless you buy private then it shouldn't matter to much.
how you getting on now anyway,
-
aye that would be great maybe one night next week when your free. I'm not doing too bad but I will be alot happier when I've got a van lol. I'm not sure if I thanked you for that work you gave me. I got most of them plus I got the farm house at the top of the road from the cottages.

No problem Jonny just give us a shout, yes I had been meaning to canvass that farm for about 4 years ;D never did get round to it

i see no one mentions the larger transits, ive always had em, not only do you get all your window cleaning gear in, there is plenty of room for other stuff if needed. very reliable and fuel consumption is good.

hi
in my opinion this is one of the worst vans in the world, its slow!!! thirsty and tinny. you can run a vivaro for the same costs which is bigger faster and nice to drive.
i got rid of the scudo i had in six months life was to short.
if i was going for a good size van i would have a vivaro or traffic.
from the original post though i think he wants something smaller. the connect is a great van no doubt about it, but its not the cheapest to but or run of the compact vans.
i am taking a long hard look at vauxhall combos, you could get an o6 or 07 for your money and spoken of highly. get th high payload one and you can run 300 litre plus out the back.
iam looking for lpg models will save a lot of fuel bills.
cheers

whatever you van you get do NOT get a lpg vauxhall combo, i had one and it was so slow you could get out and run faster, it struggled up hills empty and when loaded up with 350l and wfp gear it was a joke, averaged 25-27mpg,
the 1.4 16v has no torque and no power below 4k rpm so your always gunning it,

complete waste of time, doblo is better double the mpg and does twice as many miles per tank of diesel, can hardly feel 350l in the back and with 135bhp it pulls like a train

i had heard the exact opposite i dont expect to get anywhere fast in a little petrol combo but all reports i had it was ok.
i have vivaro with 650 tank, what i was adding was a little splash and dash vehicle for odd houses and little commercials of on there own. matbe the 1700 diesel then?

i had a 1.4 16v dual fuel combo van with a 350l tank in it, used it for about 6 months, it was really really underpowered and the savings in fuel were very small not really worth it at all less than a tenner a week, go test drive one by all means and you will see what i mean, you can get transit connects on lpg and they have more powerful engines 1.8 16v would be more up to the job
the diesel combos are good the 1.3cdti is excellant on fuel and much better for the job than the dual fuel models

Deffo the Pug Expert over the connect.
Here's why if it's your only vehicle.
3 seats
900kg payload so a 500L is fine.
The engine is fantastic.
(Mind you I've got a little doblo 1.3 which is fine with my 400litres) BUT I've got a family car too - a Pug 406 wth a 2.0 HDi engine which is what you get in the Pug van.) My engine is on 170K and is fine. Many windies round here that I know have the Pug van and swear by them.

At first I was looking to get a smaller van because I thought it would be cheaper to insure. I know for me the connect is about £600 cheaper to insure then the expert/dispatch/scudo ( I've got a DR10 on my licence that's why it's so much) and I thought the vivaro/trafic or transit would be even more to insure but iv seen a trafic for sale with 135000 on the clock for £2400 and it's about the same as the connect for insurance so I'm gonna get my step dad to take me to have a look at it to see if it's worth buying. Does anyone have a trafic? How are they to drive. reliability and cost to run?
-
Well that's it I went to see the van today and I have decided to go for it now just time to start kitting it out. So far I've got a hotwash trolly system from Peter that I plan to take apart and put in the van and I was thinking about maybe getting a 650l tank. Any advice on anything else I should get? I am planing to protectakote the van but I'm not sure how much to get will 4l be enough and how easy is it to do?
-
Jonny sorry missed the last reply's, hope it helped seeing my van last night good luck.
ps, any van will be an improvement on your car ;D your pole is worth more :o

trafic same as ducato, excellent vans,i have the ducato, perfect van imo!

Did you get your van?
A lot of people report pfoblems with gearboxes and other problems on traffics pre 06.

sorry to correct you but a Ducato is not the same as a Trafic. Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Relay are in essence the same van although Fiat are now using their Multipoint injection engines and the PSA models the Hdi engines.
The Trafic is the same as the Vauxhaul Vivaro and Nissan Primastar.
