You dont have to have CSCS. They are not legally required to work on a construction site. They are just an indication of someones competence and safety awareness.
We recently did a big construction site clean and CSCS wasn't mentioned at all, they wanted to see our P/L Insurance, that we were tax registered and then on the day we turned up we had to watch a health and safety video for about 20 minutes; wear hard-hat, steel toe-caps, flourescent jackets and sign our lives away.
This is from the CSCS wwebsite
The CSCS Card shows that the holder is considered to be competent at his or her job, lists any relevant certificate/qualifications and also shows that the holder has passed a health & safety test.

depends on which co
some insist all operatives have cscs
look at the payment terms you will be most likely be waiting 2 months for a payment then ddt 2 1/2 % mcd
retention etc and you price will be cut to the bear bones and snagged to f**k

My point was that theyre not legally required, they are simply a means to indicate some level of safety awareness/competence, nothing more.
Like cycling proficiency, nothing more than a piece of paper.

Hi
very few construction companies will allow you on site without one, you where lucky. got kicked off a bovis site a few weeks ago. doing mine asap.
Also those that dont insist on it soon will i suspect.and other organisations are adopting it as well not directly connected to construction.
cheers

I did exam in February and never bothered with getting the card as had letter saying I passed. It nearly backfired on me a couple of weeks ago after driving 80 miles to a job and very nearly being sent home again for not having the number on it. I just managed to persuade the site manager to let me on site. I was told that I will not be allowed on site again unless I have my card. I have it now though, just think it's a bit of a con when you have to pay to do exam and then pay again for the card!
