OK treat me as a complete dummy in this respect, (so nothing new there).
I want to start a website, not work related, for as little money as possible . Its only for members of a Rugby club to be able to log into and see fixtures and team lists, meeting times for away matches etc.
The main reason is to prevent the same messages and texts from the usual suspects. We used to email them out but still get the phone calls.
I am quite keen to do it myself and if it works out there are other projects that might follow on.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get started? Is there a websites for dummys book or similar?

Vistaprint are dirt cheap for websites, i really siNg their praises as my own site has raked in endless work .
i believe the site is 3 or 4 quid a month for a basic 3 pager and you set it up following their step by step method.

google websites...completley free and not bad looking if youre not looking for anything too special!! ;)

Beware of Vistaprint on all aspects, I got some cards thru them online, somehow or somewhere in there 'smallprint' was a thing to pay them £25 per month through direct debit, didn't notice it for a few months.
When I spotted it on my statements it wasn't even labelled as 'Vistaprint' had to get the bank to trace it backwards to find out who was taking my money.
Called them and got a full refund, apperantly it was one of their sister companies which you 'un-knowingly' sign upto.
I wouldn't touch Vistaprint with a barge pole! BEWARE!

Microsoft Office Live. Very easy to use and free everything. You set your page up into little module zones and then put picture, table, text or whatever in them. If I can do it anyone can ;) Buy the eurl (ie www. rugbyclubfixtures.co.uk or whatever from 123 reg or similar - it costs about £6 for 2 years).
C-Thru. I've just ordered some cards from Vista - panicking now. They advertise £5 but with this and that and the other they were £18 and a bit (charge to add a logo, then postage, then VAT on the whole lot). I certainly don't intend to pay £25 a month as well >:(

Microsoft office live websites are shutting down the end of this year. They are bringing in a different version of them thats NOTsuited for small businesses, and its not free. Be warned.
Wordpress is very very simple. You need to pay to host it with a host company though, and need to buy the address..
Google's free website sounds perfect for what you want though as mentioned above.

Oh great. I didn't know that so thanks for letting me know Matt and sorry for wrong info. If I had known I would have gone with google. Microsoft does go against the grain with me but for once I thought I was getting something for free from them. Must be the only company in the world that can sell you something on Tuesday and then tell you that you need to upgrade it on Wednesday. Also there was never a sniff of a hint when I did the website that I would one day have to pay for it. My thoughts are now unprintable :(

Its the forum for the small business websites from microsoft. Very very informative when i was using the the microsoft site. If you do a search of the forum you will find out all about office 365 which is the replacement for the old websites. The old sites are going to run till about oct 2011 but i changed over to wordpress. Didnt want the hassle when it all went tits up.
