Title: how much do you owe
Post by: Llaaww on July 18, 2011, 09:02:08 pm
I have never been skint since starting work as a window cleaner. I have never borrowed money other than a mortgage for the house.

Lately I have been looking at borrowing some money to buy a new van, and to cover the cost of putting a lad in the old van.

I am just curious to see if many of you guys are happy to borrow, or like me don't like the idea of being a slave to the bank.

That's good, mate.  Very spiritual of you.  You're free and go out with as much as you came in with; nowt.

Do you have to beg for food though?

I owe loads due to mistakes I made in my personal life some years back.  This was followed by a major illness when I was already in debt.  It's not pretty but I get by.  The debt does reduce year on year so I suppose I am on top of it - just.

u know me tosh  the deep religious belief that all possesions are evil,  i even run my business as a charity and do work for free for people and companys that cant afford a window cleaner,  as this gives me that warm feeling inside,  plus one little benefit, as a charity i dont pay tax or business rates,    but its the warm glow i like more

unless you cover a lot of miles during your working day you dont need a new van.if your struggling to earn the money to get a few grand together for a cheap second hander then dont go borrowing any money unless you already have some good regular paying work lined up that the new van will pay for itself.

sounds like you need the citizens advice bureau not a window cleaning site! ;) ;D ;D ;D

my finances are much better than they were a few years ago.i have a fair bit more money coming in than going out every month.it wasnt always like this though.i was skint for years until i started sorting my life out properly.it was a a learning curve thats for sure.it took me years to pay my debts off with lots of stress.it made me quite ill at times.thankfully them days are over.i personally wouldnt borrow but thats because i wouldnt get credit anyway!

this post was probably of no help to ya but just be careful and read the small print if you do borrow!!

regards

Why put a poll on this? It's no-ones business what anybody owes. >:(
Motto in this business here.......do not borrow what you cannot afford to repay in full tomorrow :)

if you don't like it don't post.  >:(

I am simply interested in the pro's and cons of borrowing to invest. I have never done it before, so I am having a good hard think about it before I do.

I am at a point where I have too much work for myself and one part time lad, so a bridging loan to cover the cost of a second van plus costs is looking like the way forward.

borrowing the money to get a other van and that, will take a way a lot of the worry about willl i make enough this week to pay the wages, bills, etc,  it will give you breathing space to get more work,  if you can get a loan go for it

I borrowed 15k over 5 yrs when I started out, but that immediately brought in 2.5k a month, so yeah I have no problem with borrowing.

That's pretty much how I view it.  £x per year to repay the loan versus £x per year extra profit.  Plus you will probably have use of some of the kit when it's been paid for.

Yes I'm at the keyboard in work hours.  Working very local today and needed a bog and coffee break  ;D

I was "brung up" in a "don't owe" (other than a mortgage) household and I tend to have that as a general view.

However I have modified that and can see the sense of judicious borrowing for business purposes such as when I got my van.

Sailed close to the wind in a previous business life in the 80's and 90's when I put part of the equity in my house up as security for a business and went about 3K onto overdraft in the 90's when I first went self-employed.

Bit like Helen now - will borrow if I can pay it back.

Looks like it is an  older used van,(with a decent tool box) as well as the one I have. If I get the same as I have and a second, I could probably get a scrapper for parts. All for about 2.5k.

The lad I am giving it to is on a promise to run like the clappers for the first twelve months, so I guess there should be enough cash to get something newer and keep the best of the old ones.

The handy thing about having an older engine is that they will run on chip oil fairly easily so if the fuel price gets a lot madder than it already is, I can pop into my mate the burger baron and get a tank o gas.

I was brung up the same gold but it sometimes gets a bit tempting seeing all these shiny vans about the place.

I think I would be happier being skint than in debt. Though of course being a window cleaner, I am never skint.... ;)

Thanks dave, it has crossed my mind, but Really I need another van.

Mostly it is so the dog can come, at the moment he stays at home when I have a lad in.

Also my mate has got a baby on the way, and is pretty keen on the windows. He had a go through the winter and wasn't too phased by it, so hopefully he should be a goodun.

Don't panic I still don't fancy going global just yet, but I have got an eye on a couple of towns nearby.

two days per week at the moment, but it looks like I will get this van and have him on full time. We don't really have enough for two, but really that is down to me being fussy about who I work for.

Like I say he is on a promise to run like the clappers for the first twelve months.

If you need a dig out or a spare pair of hands give us a shout.

I will pick up this van in the next wek or two

First we wanna know how deep in debt everyone is because we want to make big business expansions
Then we find out someone needs a baby sitter really!

It's all big business plans here mate!
