You connect hose from mains to the clear vessel, then to large blue vessel, you get a on/off spliiltter, one goes down and connects to waste pipe from ro, the other goes to your filters, then to ro.

You put salt in the clear, turn splitter off which goes to ro and on to waste, turn mains water on, once all the salt has gone you turn both splitters opposite so the waste one is off and ro is on, flush through the ro for about 10 mins then start turning the tap that produces water.

It just softens the water so the ro last longer,

I can draw a diagram later if you want me too.

Thanks for that. I get the idea but does the amount of salt used work out any cheaper than the resin it saves?

I don't think it will save you any resin but will help prolong the life of your RO membrane.

Thank you. I don't actually use an Ro unit anymore just Di my water is it starts out with a tds of 70.
Used to get about 2 years use out of my ro membranes and prefilter life of anything from 48 hours to 3 months.

Is there much point in softeners then ? Are they really worth all the hassel with havin 2 change the salt often? Taking into consideration salt&softner costs vs. / RO life? My tap tds is 420 into hf4 40" RO & out @ 16 - i wonder how long my membrane will last @ 2000l per week???????? ???
