Love this quote from the above link
"The Payments Council is today (12 July 2011) announcing that cheques will continue for as long as customers need them and the target for possible closure of the cheque clearing in 2018 has been cancelled. The Payments Council Board will continue to focus on security, efficiency and encouraging innovation in all types of payments to ensure customers have options best suited to the 21st century"
Cheques have been around for many years and are not as far as i am concerned a 21st century payment method !
How can it be when cheques take 3-7 days to clear in your account when you can go online and transfer money between various bank accounts in mins.
If they scrapped cheques and lowered the cost of card payment machines, then alot of people would move into the 21st century rather than living in the past with cheques.
There cant be many people out there who dont have a chip & pin cards - you have to have a certain level of credit to have a cheque book.
SCRAP THE CHEQUE and move forward payments council ... dont stay in the past !!!

I don't have any problems with accepting cheques from my customers.
I still accept cash as well. Is this still a valid method of payment, or is this going out of fashion as well? ;D

Many elderly customers don't use interweb banking, and they pay me by cheque if I leave an envelope. In a few more years, I think even the 'new' elderly will be using interweb banking, but for now cheques solves a problem.

I dont have anyone over 40 who pays by cheque
-
all old dears i deal with pay with luurrrvley cash! ;D
-
spot on Gary ... the old ones prefer to pay cash

I have done everything possible to stop customers paying with cheques.
Once you open a business account the banks hammer you with charges on them. I have encouraged my customers to pay online and most now do, I used to get hundreds of cheques each month, all need processing which takes up my time then the bank charge me to deposit them.
I got so sick of it I started charging 50p for every cheque which very quickly got customers to change, I think they used cheques out of habit but most now say they would rather pay online.
So far this week I have had just 4 cheques arrive. (all with 50p added) happy days.

Thats not the cheques fault, its the rip-off system we have, any opportunity to make a few more dollars out of us. If they wanted those cheques could clear same day, or bounce, whatever the case in the individuals account.

Matt's right. Cheques in some other modern countries (Sweden being one of 'em I think) can be cleared almost immediately as a matter of routine.
