brillo degreaser for ovens is a bit stronger then norm spray walls , leave for 20mins then use an industrail steamer and scraper. hard graft, lots of hours, thought you only did house or is this the one with the wallpaper

Hiya, yes this is the one with the wallpaper. Apparently the elderly lady who lives there now, inherited it from an even older lady who recently died, and then the other lady moved in without cleaning. Her son told me that the lady before had cleaned the house for over 20 yrs and the lady there now has been there about 6 months and can't do any cleaning as she is partially disabled.
Quite sad really. And she has a stinky dog, hairs up to your ankles on the carpets and the webs everywhere was yucky.
We only did the conservatory, kitchen and lounge but it took 8 hrs and we still didn't complete the full task list.
We will probably be called back to complete soon, They knew the grossness of it and were just happy that its 100% better than what it was, except for this problem area.

The grease is about an inch thick on the worksurface beside the hob and surrounding areas (textured wall tiles, painted walls, cupboards)

The hob would be better in the skip, it's a death trap.
I used that crappy cillit bang degreaser not sure what ph it is.
It did get a few layers off, but the surfaces are still caked in orange grime. It worked well on the doors, windows, surfaces and cupboards that were not in the epicentre for cooking.
The soda crystals got some layers off too, but didn't get right through to the surface, it's still an orange mess.

Hi

brillo degreaser is great stuff but sounds like you either have to put it on neat and leave or knock up a strong solution.

If you want to go to the extreme you could go caustic gel which I think is called Seldon S20. i used this recently on a hob which had caked on partially carbonated grease on the hob.

Brushed on with old paint brush and left for 20 mins, then scourered off. Still took lots of effort but they were chuffed with the result, about 90% came off.

Don't forget your gloves and goggles!!!!!

hi there

seldon st20, is a very strong alkaline cleaner, basically caustic.  if that doesnt shift it then, extreme measures required.

it does get to a point where restoration and cleaning are economically and faundamentally the wrong direction to go.  and the solution be replace and redec, and therefore your role then becomes a prepearation role, prior to that happening.

Hi

You can buy the Gel from your local pro supplier, never used carbon off?

It isn't that expensive and I do not use it that often but it helps to call out the Artillery when required.

Careful to check the hob for any chipped off enamel, test first just to be on the safe side.

Thanks Everyone, you have been very helpful. I would suggest a rip it out and start again approach i think.
Doesn't seem worth it. It really is that bad.
