yes ive tried the window cleaning section but only got little response. anyone do traditional window cleaning that could give me (well my mate) some advice on pricing, time it takes to clean a 3 bed semi with 10 windows, marketing tips and poaching etiquette, etc.....

£1 per unit. (if it's plain glass)
A unit being each frame of standard size, bay windows count as 2 units, small (lets say down stairs toilet window) 0.5 units.
Each climb of a ladder counts as 1 unit.....do not over reach, so if 2 climbs are needed no matter what the size then it counts as 2 units.
3rd floor windows (if he is mad enough to want to do those) start at 2 units per climb.
Time: to do a 3 bed trad style with experience about 15 -20 minutes.
Marketing: Cheap home pc printed A5 leaflet does well for beginners, leave the tri fold glossy stuff for when more experienced, these are for the posher end of the market.
Poaching: If you get a customer who changes from one window cleaner to another it's either because the last one was unreliable, rubbish at it or too expensive for them. Look for new estates that have gone up these are best.
leaflet then follow up the next evening with a door knock and "Did you get one of these leaflets we put out yesterday.......blah blah blah."

I did window cleaning for 15 years...am I right in thinking you've worked it out 10 units + 5 ladder climbs= 15 quid for a semi-detatched. If I'm correct with that calculation people wont pay that much for a semi.....its half that but you'll do 3-4 an hour and 99% of customers pay cash....its a young mans job too, keeps you fit but its proper graft....however its cheap to set but there's a knack to being good and fast. Its also a good way of getting new carpet cleaning customers as you already have one foot in the door...good luck!

Hi Derek i seen on your profile that your based in cheshire so id say HELEN's prices are a bit high for the northwest but i know some parts of cheshire are very affluent. Best thing to do is ask your your friends and family what they pay, try and find the most common price and see if you could match or even put and extra couple of quid on. Once your mate is up and running they want to be earning about £25+ph but at first they might earn half that until they get going. Any more questiond just fire away mate

cheers danny. done a bit of research on prices and its looking around £6 to £8 for a 3 bed semi, wifes mum pays £8 for 13 windows.
so i think your right about the north south price diff.
cheers for the advice helen, really appreciate your help. think the pricings abit out for our area but the other advice is very handy to know. do any of you WC's offer a discount for customers if they talk there neighbour into using your services, say 15%. makes sense as theres no travelling to the next job?

Was in wilmslow weds derek and the lady pays 10 pound for a 3 bed semi mate for her windows as the window cleaner was there..

Each time you climb the ladder = 1 unit = £1
So the house could be £10 or it could £15 if several of the individual windows upstairs require 2 climbs per unit.
Yes there is a north/south divide on prices but the danger level for regular ladder use remains the same no matter where in the country you are.

(I presume you're talking about the window frame and not gutters etc.)
And that's the difference between 50p a unit and £1 a unit.
50p gets just the glass and sill done, £1 gets glass and surrounding frame.

Seen my mate cleaning gutters on a 4 story flat in Flitwick ,they booked him for it as he was the only one mad enough to go up there

Are you looking to expand the empire, 3 bed house two people 10-15mins, we get around 5 an hour done with a team of two.
Price wise, very much depends on your market, where we are for 10 panes it's going to be £7-10 depending on size of windows.

2 x decent sized bay windows 7 panes ( 1 up stairs and one down)
1 x french doors 4 panels
1 x double window 4 panes
1 x conservatory approx 12 x 10ft
10 x single windows ( 3 down stairs & 7 up)
How much would I expect to pay?

£28 around these ways if you want it done by someone with (a)uniform, (b)marked up van, (c)cheque-internet payment, (d)insurance, (e)phone call day before etc

there doesn't seem much in it really does there. and i'm guessing its bloody hard work and not weather proof.

Them gorgian windys are hard ti clean, if I was your window cleaner it would be at least £30 per visit and you would have to clean mi carpets at least once a year for free. Have we got a deal Tony ???

derek get Brian to find a friendly good window cleaner and ask him if he could go out with him for a days work, just to observe, then he can see first hand what it involves, before he gets ino pricing and building rounds ect etc......it may not be for him.

Thats spot on neil. Theirs alot of factors that you need to take in (the exact same as carpet cleaning), they aren't big things but window cleaning is done on volume and if a few small things aren't taken into account when your pricing a few jobs up it can cost you hundreds if not thousands over the year. All depends mate, im sure their's guys out there with TM's that are cheaper than people with porties....all depends on the operator. As for knee capping iv never heard of it going that far but i have heard of people kicking ladders out from under people and vans being set on fire!

Water fed pole has much higher overheads than traditional cleaning, so although its faster, for domestic work the prices are often the same. On high work or commercial work WFP may be cheaper.
If you use a waterfed pole and do not have to climb a ladder is that cheaper.

He's got laminate flooring aparantly :-\ typical chav window cleaner lol
